The Hardest Lesson
The Hardest Lesson The year two thousand eight was the hardest year of my life, the year I lost the one thing that meant the most to me and the one thing that could never be replaced. It all started with an argument with my father I was fourteen at the time and was hard-headed and arrogant. I thought I could make my own money to help support the family; my father had been laid off of work the year before. When he found this out he was furious with me, he didn’t understand why I would do such a thing. All I was trying to do was help him. He said I was becoming a monster and I replied “If I am so bad why don’t you just send me to juvenile?” he said “That can be arranged!” out of pain and anger I screamed “I knew you were a crazy old fool!” he looks hurt and looks at my with a grim face and says “Get out of my sight,” so I leave and go to my room I start thinking about what just happened. I couldn’t believe what I just said; it came out of my mouth like something was pushing it out from the inside. I wanted to say I’m sorry but I thought it best if I let everything calm down. Later, when he came out of his room he didn’t want to talk to me so we ate dinner in silence. I loved my dad I didn’t mean those words at all and if I could take them back I would but those words had struck him in his heart, I could see it. A few days later he told me I was leaving for California to live with my sister. Apparently she was going to try to straighten me out or something, I didn’t really give it any thought because I knew in my heart I wasn’t just taking risks for my own sake, I was trying to help. A few times I would offer him money, but he refused. He said, “God will provide; I have no need for it,” I knew better so I would take his wallet at night and put the money in there, he would ask me about it in the morning and I would just shrug my shoulders and walk away. The day my sister came to pick me up she had us meet at a restaurant because she was hungry after

In A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines, Mr. Grant Wiggins' life crises were the center of the story. Although he was supposed to make Jefferson into a man, he himself became more of one as a result. Not to say that Jefferson was not in any way transformed from the "hog" he was into an actual man, but it could be believed this story was really written about Mr. Wiggins. Mr. Wiggins improved as a person greatly throughout the novel, and that helped his relationships with other people for the most part. But as a reader it cannot be forgotten about how Grant’s attitude was in the beginning to actually see the transformation in him. Grant’s bitterness was not one to look up to in the beginning of the novel because of his former teacher’s bitterness growing up. Though this was a negative in Grant’s personality he managed to have connections with people and grow through them. For example how he taught Jefferson meaning to life and to become a man. Through this Jefferson felt he could trust showing what impact each character had on each other. In the novel each character had their own characteristics and personality. There was something special about each character in the book. Each of them had their strong points and weak points for example Grant was always running away from his problems. This showed that even though Grant did become a man from teaching Jefferson in the end; for most of the novel Grant’s bitterness impacted his life strongly that he did not cope with his adversities well.…

Grant Wiggins is an elementary school teacher and also the narrator of this novel. He is an intelligent black man living in Louisiana. When recalling the vents of the trial, he states that he wasn’t there but he can visualize it. The events leading up to the trial were that Jefferson hitched a ride with 2 of his friends, Brother and bear. They all stopped at a liquor store, where brother and bear demanded that the store owner sell them alcohol. When the owner refused they all began to shoot leaving Jefferson standing there stunned. Brother, Bear, and the store owner all died in that store, and Jefferson saw the open cash register and started to take the money out of it. In the process 2 white men came into the store, and witnessed Jefferson taking the money. During the trial, his lawyer said he was a boy and wasn’t capable of planning a robbery. Every day people are treated in ways that strip them of their humanity and dignity, they are made to feel worthless. Though, one must learn their worth before they die. Through the experiences of Jefferson, Reverend Ambrose, and Miss Emma, we can view how important ones worth is to them, especially to be known before one passes away. The novel "A lesson before dying" by Ernest Gaines, exemplifies that the most significant lesson to learn before dying is that you are worth something no matter what society deems you to be, and as long as you show your humanity and dignity, it does not matter what society thinks.…

I did not understand why she did what she did but it was a fact and we all have to accept facts. I knew that this was the event that would change my life forever. 4. The novel A Lesson Before Dying is centered on a man who has no faith or real religious belief. His lack of interest in God or church greatly affects his aunt and the Reverend, but as the novel progresses the reader in turn finds that the main character, Grant, does indeed acquire some sense of religion in his own way. As the novel reaches its climax and Grant builds a stronger relationship with Jefferson he allows himself to have a limited religion. Its “limited” in the sense that Jefferson is the one who inspired him to believe in something, but he refuses to believe in the same God that those who convicted Jefferson believe in. The personal growth of not only Jefferson, but also Grant is shown through their change in religious views. They fed off of each other and were able to gain a sense of faith in God. Grant is subjective as to the extent of his belief, but he does end up believing in God and he proves it through having his children pray before Jefferson’s execution. In doing so he relieves himself of some of the guilt he felt for having possibly persuaded Jefferson into not believing in God at all. He realizes that the Reverend is indeed the “brave” one in the sense that regardless of your race, God does not judge base on color but based on character. The Reverend paid no mind to who worshiped God, but instead cared about how he worshiped God and how others should do the same making him the stronger of the two men.…
