The Greatest Gift and It's a Wonderful Life
Compare & Contrast Essay

In this piece we will be comparing and contrasting aspects of the short story “
The
Greatest Gift
,” by Philip Van Stern and the movie, “Its a Wonderful Life” by
Frank Capra
.
I will be explaining both my opinion, and the facts of both of these stories. This will help us to understand the similarities and differences of the characters, the plot and the point of view. I hope this will also help us comprehend the lesson, the specific details, and meanings of these two wonderful stories. In “The Greatest Gift” a considerate and nurturing man named George Pratt has some significant problems that cause him to spiral down into depression. He believes his life is unworthy and his perception of himself is very low. He hasn’t been able to see the good in life. He has been a “cup half empty” person for too long and he makes the horrible decision to commit suicide. He is walking in the streets at night until he comes to a bridge and he stands there to think. Just when he begins to lean closer to the edge a complete stranger quietly speaks, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” George resentfully turns around to see the stranger and asks him, “Wouldn’t do what?” The stranger responds, “What you were thinking of doing.” George asks how he knows what he was thinking and the stranger replys, “Oh, we make it our business to know a lot of things.” By this time I assumed that he was some kind of

guardian angel. George continues to speak to the stranger, and in a rant of how unworthy his life is he blurted out, “In fact, I wish I’d never been born!” The angelic stanger proceeded to grant the wish George didn’t really want, but it was too late. George didn’t exist. So the stranger gave him a satchel of brushes each with a blue handle and varicolored bristles to
“give out”. However, the brushes were really the key for George being able to get inside peoples houses. How else was he

The Biographical Lens applied to The Catcher in the Rye J.D. Salinger expresses his view of society in his novel, The Catch in the Rye. His viewpoints are seen in the book through the eyes of young Holden Caulfield. This novel demonstrates modern-day dilemmas and complications that teenagers confront in life. Throughout this novel, Holden Caufield, the protagonist shows signs of clinical depression mourning over the death of his younger brother Allie which caused him to have a slight case of Tropophobia. There are many instances that sustain evidence against Holden Caufield’s depression which expose his continuous thoughts of suicide, his choice of withdrawal from society, and his incapability of viewing the beneficial aspects in life rather than the imperfect. Holden is convinced that society is full of “phonies” and nothing else, that all people have a side in which they should not be proud of, expect the younger generation, whom are completely innocent.…

George and Lennie dislike their new job, but George reminds him that they “gotta keep it till we get a stake” (33). George could spend the money he earns for instant gratification (women and alcohol), but he reminds himself that “Me an’ Lennie’s rollin’ up a stake,” (53). George plans for the long term, so that he and Lennie can save their money to fulfill their dream of buying a house together. Later, Candy, a fellow bunkmate, hears of this dream, and proposes that he join them. This throws George a curveball, and responds, “I gotta think about that. We was always gonna do it by ourselves” (59). Candy has the money to make the dream come true, making it seem possible for a while. However, George’s plans are even further thrown off course when Lennie gets in trouble after accidentally killing Curley’s wife. Candy asks George “You an’ me can get that little place, can’t we George?” (94) but George accepts that it is end of a dream that was impossible from the start. George says, "… I think I knowed from the very first. I think I know'd we'd never do her. He [Lennie] usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would." (94). George never thought he would draw the “shoot Lennie” card, instead thinking he would be lucky enough to have the “fulfill dream” card. Therefore, George’s solitaire game represents uncertainty.…

    1. Lennie held his closed hand away from George’s direction. “It’s on’y a mouse, George.”“A mouse? A live mouse?”“Uh-uh. Jus’ a dead mouse, George. I didn’ kill it. Honest! I found it. I found it dead.” (pg. 5)2. George said “Ya know, Lennie, I’m scared I’m gonna tangle with that bastard myself. I hate his guts. Jesus Christ! Come on. They won’t be a damn thing to eat.” (pg. 37)3. “Gotta bad gut ache,” said Candy. “Them God damn turnips give it to me. I knowed they was going to before I ever eat ‘em.” (pg. 44)4. “I don’t want no fights,” said Lennie. He got up from his bunk and sat down at the table, across from George. Almost automatically George shuffled the cards and laid out his solitaire hand. He used a deliberate, thoughtful slowness. (pg. 55)5. His voice grew soft and persuasive. “S’pose George don’t come back. S’pose he took a powder and just ain’t coming back. What’ll you do then?” (pg. 71)6. “A guy sets alone out here at night, maybe readin’ books or thinkin’ or stuff like that. Sometimes he gets thinkin’, an’ he got nothing to tell him what’s so an’ what ain’t so. Maybe if he sees somethin’, he don’t know whether it’s right or not. He can’t turn to some other guy and ast him if he sees it too. He can’t tell. He got nothing to measure by. I seen things out here. I wasn’t drunk. I don’t know if I was asleep. If some guy was with me, he could tell me I was asleep, an’ then it would be all right. But I jus’ don’t know.” (pg. 73)7. Crooks sat on his bunk and looked at the door for a moment, and then reached for the liniment bottle. He pulled out his shirt, poured a little liniment in his pink palm and, reaching around, he fell slowly to rubbing his back. (pg. 83)8. And Lennie said softly to the puppy, “Why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice. I didn’t bounce you hard.” He bent the pup’s head up and looked in its face, and he said to it, “Now maybe George ain’t gonna let me tend no rabbits, if he fin’s out you got killed.” (pg. 85)9. She was…
