The Great Gatsby Film Essay

Two film adaptations exist of Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby, the A&E version made in 2000, and the Warner Brothers depiction in 2013. Both versions contain their share of faults as well as moments that do justice to the book, but the latter far outweighs the former in the newer presentation.
The 2013 cinematic perspective of the book presents a greater understanding of the extravagance of Gatsby’s wealth as well as the identity of American culture at the time, highly emphasizing the “flapper” persona. Additionally, as far as scenery goes, the portrayal of the Valley of Ashes in the 2013 film was much more true to the book, as it emanated a feeling of hopelessness and poverty, which focused the viewer on the true characterization of the Wilsons. On the subject of characterization, Myrtle Wilson was represented well in the film in regards to her eccentricity and hints of classlessness in her speech. Furthermore, Daisy is presented in a blithe manner, which was more closely aligned with the novel than the 2000 version. Her mannerisms and dialect were exhibited in such a fashion that she appeared weak and naïve. As for Gatsby’s character, the DiCaprio interpretation emphasizes his denial in the fact that Daisy has moved on and is merely using him for a summer fling. It stays true to the characterization of Gatsby as a hopeless romantic and once again aligns itself with the themes of the book. Also, the scene where the heat became oppressive was much better executed in the new version, as it showed how Tom and Gatsby were at each other’s throats, and further set the mood of the scene with boiling tempers due to the heat. Finally, the last scene where Tom and Daisy entirely ignore the death of Gatsby as well as the funeral is a cinematic slap in the face to the audience, revealing their intrinsic nature as the true antagonists all along.     As a top selling mind wrenching, interesting book the film industry decided to make a film. Discussed is a compare and contrast of the book, “The Great Gatsby” written by F Scott Fitzgerald and the 1974 movie directed by Jack Clayton. There are few differences in the book and the movie. The biggest contrast between the movie and the book would be the stark contrast in the portrayals of Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby’s relationship. In the book Daisy seems much more caring and loving and not so much of a snob.     New version- The new version depicts Myrtle’s death. It is also a lot more cinematic about each scene. Two scenes are missing from the new movie that were in the old movie: Wilson showing up to Tom’s house looking for Gatsby, and the entirety of Gatsby’s dad showing up for Gatsby’s funeral. Acting in the new movie is somewhat better than the old version, but missed the emotional bits.…

    There is a great deal of differences and similarities between the novel version and the movie version of “The Great Gatsby”. The novel version of The Great Gatsby is the more “official” version of the story. As we all know Hollywood likes to add somethings to their movies and make them more interesting. .     In Chapter 5, Daisy and Gatsby are reunited in Nick’s house and then Gatsby shows Daisy around his house. Gatsby attempts to reward Nick with money for helping bring him and Daisy together again, “Well, this would interest you. It wouldn’t take up much of your time but you might pick up a nice bit of money.” This shows how Gatsby is not used to people being hospitable towards him without wanting anything in return. It also demonstrates how Gatsby thinks he has to buy Nick’s loyalty in the hope that by bribing Nick with money, he won’t tell Tom about his meeting with Daisy. Nick refuses claiming, “I’ve got my hands full,” This reveals that Nick is very class conscious as he thinks he is above receiving money for something he has done. It also shows that he is aware of the corrupt criminal world that Gatsby is involved in because he doesn’t want to take the chance of getting involved in the same world as Gatsby.…

    This is the first movie I have seen which was directed by Baz Luhrmann. For the most part, I think he did a rather good job, however the whole typewritten words over a bad CGI sky thing reminded me of a really cheesy gif someone would have on their tumblr page, just saying. As for the music, I believe he uses modern music and dance in a retro setting as a way to capture the way the audience at the time would have felt in that setting.     In the novel The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan is possibly the most mysterious and perhaps disappointing character. She captures the hearts of both Tom Buchanan, her unfaithful, though providing husband and Jay Gatsby, her lover from five years prior. Many disastrous incidents occurred in all aspects of the novel. It would be easy to blame all of them on Tom, because she was cheating on Daisy, or even Gatsby, because he lured Daisy in with his elaborate house and fancy shirts. But, all of the unfortunate events that occurred throughout the novel were undoubtedly and entirely, Daisy Buchanan’s fault.     Scott Fitzgerald and the different principles of the 1920s. It uses words such as “Jazz” (popular type of music), “steps leading to my dreams” (the American dream), and “short-haired girls” (which was a new style back then) to illustrate the Jazz Age. Nick is the writer of this poem, and throughout the poem, he is observing and describing the different colors he sees in the party. The first stanza is orange and it symbolizes warmth, energy and vigour to illustrate the “jazz [roaring]”, the “rich golden sun” and the “oranges and lemons”.
