On August 5, 1949, a wildfire overran 16 smokejumpers and firefighters in Mann Gulch on the Helena National Forest in Montana. The fire was most likely started by lightning from a thunderstorm. Thought to be much smaller than it actually was, the fire quickly grew large and out of control, covering 3000 acres in 10 minutes during its blow up stage. Upon approaching Mann Gulch, the crew noticed the fire had already crossed onto their side of the gulch. Imagine standing in the dead of night watching everything you hold dear go up in flames. Every possession, memory, and treasure that you have kept over the years gone in a single instant. That is exactly what happened to Anna Bradstreet on that July night in 1666. She stood and watched her whole life disappear into ashes. Like most people she could not understand why this has happened to her, yet in the same instant she praises God for reminding her that the Lord gives and takes without prejudice. Anna Bradstreet is like any person who believes in God, one moment being reminded of His love and the next wondering if your faith is for naught.…
On April 18, 1906 at 5:12 AM a earthquake and fire developed in San Francisco that only lasted seconds, but yet it destroyed ¾ of the city including 300,000 homes and 38,000 buildings at the end. In addition to this tragic incident the fire department lost almost all of its water due to the tremor snapping the water mains deep in the ground.…
Hot scorching flames rising from the ground of the homes of the innocent. The smell of smoke filling your lungs as you struggle to get a breath of air. But what would have caused three hundred people to die and one hundred thousand Chicago residents to go homeless. How about the famous legend of Mrs O’Leary and her cow? Why not Pegleg Sullivan the one who first noticed the barn spark up in flames. The most responsible and logical answer to all this Biela’s comet. The summer of 1871 was very dry, leaving the ground parched and the wooden city vulnerable. On Sunday evening, October 8, 1871, just after nine o'clock, a fire broke out in the barn behind the home of Patrick and Catherine O'Leary at 13 DeKoven Street. How the fire started is still unknown today, but an O'Leary cow often gets the credit. The firefighters, exhausted from fighting a large fire the day before, were first sent to the wrong neighborhood. When they finally arrived at the O'Leary's, they found the fire raging out of control. The blaze quickly spread east and north. Wooden houses, commercial and industrial buildings, and private mansions were all consumed in the blaze. Historians agree that on Sunday evening, October 8, 1871, the Chicago Fire did indeed start in the barn of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick and Catherine O'Leary. While the blaze ironically spared the O'Leary home, located on the city's West Side at 137 De Koven Street, much of the rest of Chicago was not so fortunate. Before the fire died out in the early morning of Tuesday, October 10, it had cut a swath through Chicago approximately three and one-third square miles in size. Property valued at $192,000,000 was destroyed, 100,000 people were left homeless, and 300 people lost their lives.…
For the English colonies, the French and Spanish colonies were an hindrance to westward expansion, trade and cooperation with Native Americans. They saw the French and Spanish as a potential military threat in the new world. The English, who where mainly protestant, thought of the French and Spanish colonies as a bastion of Roman Catholic Christianity, which bothered them greatly. In 1739, Great Britain declared war on Spain in what was known as the War of Jenkin’s Ear, which was fought mostly in the New World. Then this war merged into the much intenser and larger war of the Austrian Succession, which saw Great Britain and France as opponents. This war started in 1744 and lasted until 1748. The war had turned out to be a draw but intensified British and France rivalry, and both kingdoms increased its military and fortifications in the New World.…
