The Great Debaters
The Great Debaters is a drama film based on the story of Melvin B. Tolson; Union Activist, Communication and English professor of Wiley College. Tolson had a mediocre vision of transitioning four amateur African Americans into master debaters which would allow them to defeat all other African American debate teams. In 1930, Mr. Tolson held tryouts for the debate team. He warned all contestants that only four will be left standing, however, he reminds them that debate is all about the hotspot in which depicts who will withstand. “The Great Debaters” is directed as well as starred by Denzel Washington. The primary theme of this film is to explain the difficulties as well as identify the structure of four individuals that became master debaters during the time of inequality towards African American in the Jim Crow South.
There are five protagonists in the film, Melvin B. Tolson, Henry Lowe, Samantha Booke, James Farmer Jr. and Hamilton Burgess. Before watching the film, you do not need to know any history about Wiley’s College Debate team in the late 1930s because the film does such. The film takes you through each act that the debaters has encounter which makes the film relatable to some individuals. Yet, the history of Wiley’s college provides credibility to the film. Even though, some areas of the film were omitted, it still delivers the significances to the audience.
