The Good Life

When most people are asked what is the “good life”, you can bet that 90% of those people would come up with answers such as, “being rich” or “winning the lottery.” While money might be a nice benefit to having a good life, it sure doesn’t show how successful you are in life. The good life to me is determined on accomplishing or at least striving for the goals set out for yourself. Certain goals that I have may never be accomplished, but it’s the striving to get there that makes you a hard worker and successful. The ultimate goals I have in accomplishing my good life would consist of going to college, becoming a doctor, having a family, and lastly just being a great person. The first part of my good life consists of going to college. Currently being a senior in High School, it’s scary to think that I’m going to living without my parents forever starting next year. I understand that in order to achieve my goals, I have to take on this great deal of responsibility thrown at me. During my college experience, I want to join a fraternity as a way to make new friends and build new relationships. I’m also thinking about going into Pre-Med and understand all the hard work I will have to do in order to succeed. I understand there will be many ups and downs but pushing through these obstacles will show everyone what type of man I will be. Sometime through my college life, I’m expecting to meet a nice and honest girl who hopefully will turn out to be my future wife someday. My good life starts out with getting into college and doing well there. As far as the second part of my good life, I would like to one day go through pre med and become a doctor. Both of my parents are doctors and many members of my family have been doctors so I think it adds just a little bit of pressure of being one myself. In all honesty, I think it adds a little bit of fuel to fire as a kind of motivation to push myself to my limits and overcome any obstacle in my path. I do not just want to become a doctor from my parents being one, I truly love the medical field and the idea of helping people and athletes come back from injuries sounds amazing. Onto the third part of my good life, having a family would be so important to me as one of my goals for life. The responsibility of finally getting married and having a couple kids is truly when I believe a boy becomes a man. To take care of a baby and watch him grow up to be like you one day is a beautiful thing everyone in the world should want to do. I don’t know the numbers of kids I’d want to have, but at least one boy to play some sports with as I’m getting older. As part of the most important way to end a good life, it has to be being a great person. No matter where I end up in life, I want to be known as someone who was just a great all around person. A person that you can trust, and will make sure you have a good time whenever your with them. Whether it’s making someone laugh when one is sad or pushing him or her to make them better, I want to be known as a great all around person. This to me is the good life, a life full of success.

Depending on who is asked, the good life has a different meaning. For Siddhartha, it had a lot to do with happiness, and happiness for Siddhartha meant achieving his goal of finding salvation through his own path, his own experience. That was the only way to quench his thirst, to find his destiny, to truly find the peace and happiness he seeks in his heart. Although he found pleasure, which he sometimes confused for happiness, nonetheless it never fulfilled his goal of reaching Nirvana.…

In the article, Leider also asked two questions what I thought was very important. What do you want? And how will you know when you get it? Of course I want to be successful like everyone else, but not everyone has the same definition of success. I always thought that being successful means to make a lot of money, own a big house, and drive around a nice car. After reading the article, I realized that it’s not completely true. Leider mentions that a lot of people disagree with this and that a good life means living in the place where you belong, being with the people you love, and doing the…

I started my first year of college with my life prearranged. I had a ridiculous notion that everything was going to be a piece of cake. I was going to join different clubs, do lots of research, make the dean’s list, make my parents proud and attend as many parties as I could. However, now when I look back, I realized that I was too comfortable in my life. I thought I was ready to overcome every obstacle that was thrust upon me but I was sadly mistaken. College was a culture shock. I concluded that college is an entirely different universe, then high school. My GPA dropped for the first time in my life from a 3.7 in high school to a 2.8. The decline in my GPA made me realize that my journey to becoming a doctor is not always going to be easy. It made me hunger to go to medical school even more, to overcome the academic and emotional hurdles, and…
