The Gods Must Be Crazy

The Gods Must Be Crazy 1 is a South African comedy film which tells the story of Xi, a Bushman from the deep Kalahari Desert. He lived happily with his family and tribe because he thought the god provided them with plenty of things. The film contains various elements about cultural differences and intercultural communication concepts. In this essay, I aim to analyze the film in the light of the concepts of ethnocentrism and values. The literature review of the concepts will be discussed in the first two paragraphs, and a description of the segments relevant to the chosen concepts, followed by analysis and discussion on how these segments informs the concepts and what could help viewers to understand.

The term “Ethnocentrism” was first used by William G. Sumner in which he defined it as "the technical name for the view of things in which one's own group is the center of everything, and all others are scaled and rated with reference to it” (Piotr, 1996). Sumner also stated it normally led to prejudice of one's own group's dominance, and belief of superiority over other groups. In general, ethnocentrism is the judgment of another culture only by one’s own values from their particular ethnic group or culture; particularly language, behaviour, customs, and religion are of concern. Ethnocentrism is classified into three stages: denial, defensiveness, and minimisation. In the denial stage, one is incapable or indisposed to recognise cultural difference, and avoid people from other groups unconsciously, and also strongly maintain a traditional worldview. In the defensiveness stage, one will negatively judge cultural differences. In the minimisation stage, one accepts cultural differences while believing that all human beings are basically the same.

    The movie the Gods Must Be Crazy is about cultural diffusion. In the beginning of the movie we are introduced to a tribe that is isolated from everything else. One of the tribe members happens to find an empty glass bottle that apparently fell from a plane, but the tribe member believes that it fell from the sky and that it was a gift from the gods. Excitedly he shows all the other tribe members the gift from the gods but none of them seem to know what it is. So they immediately find various uses for the bottle and it becomes used for everything. They used it to make music, chop food, but they never actually drank out of it. Due to its various uses everyone wanted to use the bottle but there was only one which caused them to have to share. Apparently they weren't very used to sharing which caused arguments over who could use the bottle and they would end up hurting each other. Instantly they blamed the bottle for their fighting and the bottle went from being a gift from the gods to it being a punishment.…

    Rarely do you find a film both intelligent and entertaining like “The Gods Must Be Crazy”. The film is a collision of the individual journeys of three separate groups: the journey of Xi, the bushman, traveling to the end of the earth to get rid of a Coca-Cola bottle; the growing relationship between Kate Thompson, a school teacher, and Andrew Steyn, a clumsy scientist; and the actions of a band of terrorist led by Sam Boga. One day, a Coca-Cola bottle drops from the sky and lands unbroken near the temporary home of the bushman. The bushman family, completely isolated from humanity, has never seen such a thing and perceive it as a gift from the gods. Although the object proves to have many uses, its singularity becomes the source of jealousy, anger and violence. Xi decides to banish this “evil thing” forever since it has caused so much unhappiness. At the same time, former news reporter Kate Thompson decides to change her life and become a school teacher in an African village. In order to arrive at the village, Kate has to endure the experience of staying overnight in the Kalahari due to the clumsy antics of her driver, Andrew Steyn, and a dysfunctional vehicle aptly named ‘the Antichrist’. Their relationship grows through their various experiences. Meanwhile, Sam Boga is leading a pact of terrorists in violent attempt of revolution. These three different story-lines merge in a conflict in which Xi and Andrew must rescue a group of school children along with their teacher, Kate, who are being held hostage by Sam Boga. This very entertaining and thought-provoking film provides perfect examples of the three sociological theories. These theories are widely accepted frameworks that sociologists have created in order to answer the question ‘What keeps a society together?’ Moreover, the frameworks help us analyze social change and development.
