The Goddess Of The Harvest: Demeter
Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, displays the character traits of a loving mother with a lost child. When Demeter is looking for her daughter, we see how much she loves Persephone. Demeter stops taking care of growing plants and agriculture because she is fixated on the loss of her daughter. Demeter wishes that she could have protected Persephone, so she feels guilty and sad and cannot do her work. Secondly, Demeter is miserable, and her lack of concern for anyone but Persephone shows how unhappy she is. People begin to go hungry, and she does not care even though she is the goddess of agriculture. If she were happier, people would not be starving, so her frustration and anger at Hades spread to many others. Finally, Demeter is resourceful

The movie leaves out a few important characters that were told in Perseus’s original myth. Originally, Perseus set out on his quest for Medusa’s head in order to save his mother Danae from King Polydectes. In the movie however, they replace the importance of his mother with his lover Io, who he must save from the sea monster, the Kraken. Film makers know the importance of a love story in today’s movies, which is probably why they make this change. Also, the movie is given an obvious villain, which is where Hades is brought into it. With him being the easily identifiable evil character, that leaves no room for confusion. Perseus’s character is only given minor changes from the original myth to the movie, still portraying him as a brave and compassionate…

For Penelope Ithaca without Odysseus was not home, while for Tecmessa without Ajax she will be both physically and emotionally homeless. She claims that although she has suffered terrible things, she has always supported Ajax selflessly. Therefore, she believes that one should always remember the kindness laid on them. Innocence, desire, and obsession are all facets of the myth of Persephone and Hades. The arranged abduction that took place broke a divine mother’s heart enough to affect the course of life on Earth forever. He was smitten with her youth and beauty, but her mother, Demeter refused to let him have her hand in marriage (Persephone, Queen of the Underworld 1). The drastic measures that Hades would take to ensure Persephone’s hand in marriage would become known as The Abduction of Persephone.…

In Greek culture the people showed their beliefs in the way they represented the gods they worshipped. The religious cults used female deities to exemplify such things as human and earthly fertility. Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, is a wonderful example of this. The Greeks tradition of storytelling, as a means of passing on poems, is thought to have been the method of transport for much of the information that was passed on in those days. Many of these poems described the sexual / biological differences between the sexes. Females were thought to be insatiable while males had the capability of showing great restraint. Female sexuality was exemplified through the depiction of women like Aphrodite and Helen of Troy. (The Trojan War was said to have been started because Paris abducted Helen from her household.)…

Since her Roman counterpart was Demeter, and Demeter was the actual goddess of agriculture than Ceres was the protector of all the activities of the agricultural cycle. For example, Ceres was the one that watered it everyday and gave it sunlight. This is why she is important to mythology because without her protection of the agriculture, the gods and goddess would die of starvation. Ceres was one of the goddess responsible for life itself. Ceres was the one that showed humans how to grow wheat.…

In every interpretation of the original hymn, the seasons have to do with Persephone eating pomegranate seeds and being forced to return to the underworld for one third of the year. The difference is how she comes about eating the seed(s). In all three of the interpretations I found, Persephone accepts the pomegranate seeds and might look for more from Hades. I sincerely don’t understand why she would accept something from Hades at last second. Also, why did Hermes not make an attempt to stop her? Maybe this just shows the madness of mythology. Common sense is…

As all cultures do, the Greeks had beliefs as to how they came to be. These beliefs stretched out into their daily lives and where they went after they died. They worshipped many gods and goddesses, each one having a different sort of specialty. Their rituals included animal sacrifices, myths explained their origins, and they had festivals to celebrate their gods as a way to please them. Not everyone believed firmly in the gods and goddesses, though. Some were even noted as skeptics. However, religion played a large role in the government of Ancient Greece, therefore, as a whole, the theory of the gods and goddesses was widely accepted.…
