There are several methods of weed control, which include 1) Cultural and mechanical weed control methods, 2) Chemical weed control methods, 3) Biological weed control methods (Tu et al., 2001). Commonly used weed control strategies such as hand weeding, mechanical weeding and chemical herbicides can control certain weed species. However, hand weeding is time-consuming and very expensive, while the use of chemical herbicides, on the other hand, not only are becoming more expensive, but also contribute to environmental pollution. Weeding, usually by hand, accounts for up to 60% of total pre-harvest labour input in the developing world (Webb and Conroy, 1995). The management of weeds is a necessary but expensive challenge, and chemical weed control accounts for over $14 billion spent annually on herbicides (Kiely et al., 2004). Weeds are the most important of the economic and environmental pest problems, and they are the target of much of the chemicals applied throughout the world. Thus, herbicides comprise 47% of the world agrochemical sales, and insecticides 29% and most of the rest being fungicides (Woodburn,…

The article reviewed discussed the topic of human cytotoxicity in response to exposure to glyphosate, its major metabolite (AMPA), and the commonly added surfactant compounds found in major herbicides. Glyphosate exposure has increased world-wide at an exponential rate along with the production of genetically modified crops. Currently up to 75% of genetically modified crops are treated with glyphosate containing herbicides. As this increase has occurred glyphosate and its associated chemical additives contaminated rivers, springs, and other natural sources of drinking water. The compounds added to many of the most widely used herbicides are…

With the rising world population, we will need more food. Farmers will not be able to support the whole world with food supply. The USDA is conducting research on the cost if Atrazine is banned. "The costs of treating all surface water consumed by those living in the Midwest would be about $400 million annually. Banning atrazine would eliminate the need to incur these costs, but the costs to producers and consumers range between $517 million and $665 million." (USDA). The USDA will continue to do research. Atrazine has been the most popular herbicide by farmers for over 50 years because it works and is safe. 80 countries use this safe herbicide. In the United States 65 percent of corn and 69 percent of sorghum is treated with Atrazine. Nebraska is the top producer of corn and 77 percent of their corn is treated with Atrazine. Illinois' corn is 70 percent treated. Iowa used Atrazine on over 13.7 million acres of their own corn fields. As you can see my facts are more important than some swayed frog results. As the USDA stated if Atrazine is banned it will cost farmers and consumers up to $665 million a year. Food prices will spike in the grocery stores because farmers will have to spend more money on weed control. Water treatment would be cheaper than banning Atrazine. If they want to ban it, ban it in certain areas that are having…
