The Giver – Theme Essay Imagine never feeling anything at all. No happiness, no excitement, no nervousness nor anxiousness. You feel absolutely nothing. That's what your life would be like without having feelings. Emotions give people's life depth and meaning. The Giver teaches us that having emotions is important to not just living, but to feeling alive. Being able to feel love and joy adds more value to one's life. The people who lived in Jonas’s community were unable to express any type of feelings. Jonas was the only person who received the memories of love. To be able to truly experience and appreciate life's pleasant emotions, it is necessary to experience the unpleasant emotions as well. The extremes of emotions are what make the good feelings feel so good, in contrast to the low feelings. You would not really be able to understand and appreciate love and enjoy unless you have also experienced the lows of pain and sorrow. Another feeling that people experience is pain. A person's emotions can go from love and joy to pain and sorrow. Empathy toward our fellow human beings makes a person compassionate and understanding toward other people’s tragedies. This allows us to be able to become more connected with other people and give a sense of community. For example, in this book, some citizens in the community are able to watch releasing ceremonies.
