In my paper I am going to be describing the short story The Gift of the Magi. Throughout my paper I am going to describe what I feel is the theme of the story itself. I will also be explaining and identifying symbolism used and described in the story, as well as talking about the point of view that the narrator used in the story. Finally, I will be describing how the literary elements affect the narrators theme. The Gift of the Magi, is a short story written by O Henry, in this short story is the true meaning of love and the importance it is to show your loved ones how much they mean to you and how much you care about them. I believe that the theme of the story, The Gift of the Magi, would be the gift of giving. People often forget about the importance and giving and just focus their attention on receiving. They are less likely to worry more about purchasing something for somebody else as they are worried about what somebody else is going to purchase and give to them as a present. My look on this is it is better to give than to receive. In this story it is like how I feel and how I think around Christmas time they do not think about what their husband or their wife is going to be purchasing them as gifts this year. They are just focused on and concerned about buying each other the gift they believe is the perfect gift. They want to show them how much they care about them, and even if it means turning in their prized possessions they will do that in order to purchase this gift for Christmas. It shows how hard of a time financially that Jim and Della were having. Della only had $1.87 to her name to be able to purchase her husband Jim the gift she wanted to for Christmas and this was not going to happen. She knew that she was going to have to sell her hair to be able to purchase her husband Jim’s watch that she wanted to get

The Adoration of Magi is a scene were wise men come to see and bring gifts to Jesus. The pigment used in the painting was tempera, which is a water-soluble pigment. The piece was painted on wood. I used to think that “The Gift of the Magi”, was a story about a couple that included an extremely dramatic girl who is insecure about everything, but now I know that it is actually about issues that people face in their everyday lives. Also, that it is about how people can face or solve their issues with the help of people they love. Even though, throughout parts of the story, Della’s life could be an example of the quote, “Sometimes our thoughts are backed up by so much insecurity, that they create the lies we believe,” In the end she truly learns that because of all of her bad experiences she has been through she has been shaped into the person she is today so she doesn't need to be insecure. Lastly, she started to change a little by being comforted and hearing and realizing that…

Both Della and her husband Jim, both had been saving up their money to buy each other Christmas presents. Neither of them had quite enough. Della, had sold her hair, whereas Jim, had sold his watch. Towards the end of the story, there is an example of foreshadowing. “The magi brought valuable gifts that was not among them. This dark assertion will be illuminated later on.” This gives you an idea that something is going to happen When Jim had come home, he realized what she had done. He began to tell her that her Christmas present was a set of combs and they now could not be put to much use for a while. Della, had gotten him a chain for his watch which he had sold. “Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are the wisest. Everywhere they are the wisest. They are the magi.” This quote shows that even though their gifts are of no use right now, being with each other is a good enough gift over all. At first they were both disappointed, but then realized that gifts are not what matter but having each…

The plots of these two stories differ from each other, but are still both ironic. In “The Necklace” Mathildes husband got her an invitation to a high class party, and she got upset and made a big deal about it because she didn’t have a new dress. She also wanted a necklace to go with that dress. So her husband bought her a new dress, and she ended up borrowing a necklace from her friend who is high class. She ends up losing the necklace and having to pay 10 years of debt due to that, she saw her friend 10 years later and found out the necklace was a fake. In “The Gift of The Magi” They both love each other and wanted to get Christmas presents for each other. So Della cut her hair off so she could by Jim a chain for his antique pocket. Jim sold his pocket watch to buy Della a set of combs for her hair. So that’s why it makes the story’s ending Ironic.…

In the short story, “The Gift of the Magi”, O. Henry uses literary devices to show us that love and sacrifice are powerful human emotions, that cannot be outstripped by material possessions. In the story, the author uses many quotes to express symbolism to help reiterate the theme, one of the quotes is, “of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are the wisest. Everywhere they are the wisest. They are the Magi” (O Henry 185-186). This quote applies to the theme, because it helps to relate their decision (to sacrifice and give) as the wisest people, as it shows that their selfless and that they’re merrily sacrificing possessions they are fond of for each other, whom they love. The author uses many literary devices to emphasise the theme,…

She was upset about cutting her hair but she wanted to make her husband happy. Her husband had to give away his pocket watch.…

The Magi were wise men who brought valuable gifts to baby Jesus since Jesus was extremely significant to them. In the quote: “And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house,” the author restates that Della and Jim have given up their prized possessions for each other.
