The Formation of Groups & Teams

MGMT 317 Organizational Behavior

In this paper I will explain how and why teams and groups are formed, the different types of groups and effectiveness of work groups. The process of a group activity is the interaction and mutual influence among group members as they complete the group activity, communication, leadership, conflict, conflict resolutions and norms of behavior in the group. A group is two or more people who interact with each other to achieve certain goals or needs. The purpose is to accomplish the same goal using my skills, personalities, abilities and experiences to be more effective. “Group forming is a process and there are five stages for group development: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning.” (Hunter, Dale, Bailey, Anne, Taylor, Bill, 1995). Some characteristics of work groups that influence or affect the way members behave in the area of group performance can include the group size, group composition, group function, group status, group efficacy and social facilitation. Groups control their members with roles and rules. Role is the division of work among the group members. Rules are made to control group behavior. Work groups establish goals to achieve, using all members’ skills, abilities and experiences. I intend to explain about process loss and process gain. This includes the characteristics that contribute process gain and sources that influence process loss. For example, small groups are considered to be process gain, because it’s a small group, they have better communication and it’s easy to get to know each other better. “There are also sources of potential process loss. This can be social loafing, member negativity. It means sources that don’t permit to achieve the goals or achieving

    Whether groups are formed for social or task oriented purposes, the ability to produce and maintain a sense of affiliation, peer support and collaboration is important for overall group functioning. The cohesion of a social group is produced through the establishment of a set of group norms, which are later defined as a guide for conduct accepted within a group of individuals.     In “The Forgotten Group Member” case study, the organizational behavior group developed using some of these five stages: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. Forming is characterized by the groups desire to be accepted. This is the orientation part of the group development and a leader is chosen. In the storming stage, group members often discuss and debate about which tasks and duties are assigned to whom. The key factor in the successful transition from this stage is the ability to listen. While in the norming phase, cohesion is evident through the group’s interpersonal relationships. Each member is opened to new ideas based on the facts presented by other members. An understanding of each other leads to a higher trust level which leads to a better working team. Performing, while not reached by every group, is an evolution of independence within the group, where there is trust that everyone will perform as desired and there are no interpersonal issues amongst the members.     For week three topics of discussion we decided to discuss the five stages of development a group priority. After reading and reviewing the information provided there are many things that were very important. When it comes to the five stages of development they include forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Each of these stages placed in important role in development. However, what defines a group groups are two or more individuals that come together for the same reasons. They can be formal or informal. Groups are formed for social identity and the development of emotional reaction exists when a group fails or succeed. This helps members identify who they are and where they fit in. As the stages of development the first stage show management that the forming stage you can expect employees to start to see themselves as a group. Next the storming stage is when members begin to disagree about who will be in charge. When in the norming dates is a step the members behavior consists of cooperation and working towards a common goal. The performing stage is when members begin to work successfully with great energy. And in the adjourning stage, which is the final stage, shows what happens to the members at the end of the group and they resume their normal responsibility as these stages show what to expect when groups are formulated. As many react differently these stages are for people with a strong sense of purpose. As we take a look at group properties we have roles, standards that are acceptable behavior. Status is a social rank given to each member who exhibit different roles, bright, and ritual to differentiate themselves. The size of a group does matter it shows the overall behavior of the group. Smaller groups tend to be faster, while larger groups are better problem solver. Cohesiveness shows that members tend to get along and are motivated to stay in the group.
