ABSTRACT 5 introduction 6
Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is one of the most important fruits marketed in the world with a global production exceeding 26 million tons in 2004 (FAOSTAT, 2004). One of the agro-wastes currently causing pollution problems is the peels of the mango (Mangifera indica L.) fruit. Several methods have been proposed in order to combat this. Perhaps the most popular of these is the simplest: turning peelings into electricity. 6
Mango is processed to a maximum extent, thereby producing high quality of solid and liquid wastes. This contributes about 40 to 50% of total fruit waste out of which, 5 to 10% is pulp waste and 15 to 20% is kernel (Anonymous, 2004; Madhukara et al., 1993; Maini et al., 2000; Pandey et al., 2000). This waste is either used as cattle feed or dumped in pen areas, where it adds to environmental pollution. 6 problem statement 7

ABSTRACT

When fruit wastes are thrown away and break down in landfills, together with other organic materials, it becomes the main contributor to the generation of methane – a gas 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. The researchers are aiming to produce electrical energy from fruit peelings, specifically raw mango peelings, that is enough to power up a motor-generated device to avoid global warming. Mango peelings contain acids like gallic acid, caffeic acid and lactic acid which scientifically, these acids are known to be producing
