The first FBI field office was built in North Carolina with only 15 agents at first, but as we know now that number has definitely increased. Today there are currently 56 field offices and over 400 FBI facilities. If the crime committed by a fugitive is severe enough, that is when the FBI will assist local and state law enforcement agencies. During a background investigation of a suspect done by the FBI, they will look at a person’s character, associates, reputations, loyalties, and abilities and these factors can determine how or how not dangerous an individual is. The mission of the FBI is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats. They have to enforce the criminal laws, provide leadership and go by criminal justice services. People may not realize how important the FBI is, but truthfully they are doing so much more than you can imagine. Serving as an FBI agent is a demanding job and often the agent is placed in a tough situation that makes great demands on their life. Physical fitness is the difference between success and failure. Strong deductive skills, flexibility, and irreproachable moral character are key traits for those who want to succeed in the FBI. The sensitive nature of the work requires a person with sound judgment and discretion. Working for the FBI is rewarding, challenging, and very unpredictable. Each day brings something different. You can be sitting at your desk one moment, then a bank robbery occurs and everyone runs into action. It isn’t your average 9 to 5 job but if you have the heart and soul to take on these major responsibilities, it can be done.
