The Ethical Dilemma of Abortion
At some point in everyone’s life they have probably heard an argument or a commercial about the ethical dilemma of abortion. Since the historical 1973 Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade, the discussion of a woman’s right to have an abortion has been one of the most contentious moral and political debates in America. The Court decided that a woman’s right to an abortion fell within the right to privacy, protected by the fourteenth amendment. The decision gave a woman total freedom and control of the pregnancy in the first trimester, and defined different levels of state interests for the second and third trimesters. The laws of 46 states were affected by the Court’s ruling. Despite this decision, the ethical and moral question still remains, when does a human life begin? Pro-choice advocates argue that an embryo has no rights because it is only a potential and not an actual person, and that it should not have rights that come before those of the pregnant woman. They also say that whether or not to go through with a pregnancy is an absolute personal choice, because it involves a woman’s body, personal health, and future. There are many reasons why women consider abortion. Over half of all women who have an abortion used a contraceptive method during the month they became pregnant. When these methods fail, it leads women to consider other options. The reasons most frequently cited were that having a child would interfere with education, work, or ability to care for dependants. That they could not afford a baby now, or they did not want to be a single mother who is having relationship problems. Other reasons are because they didn’t want to tell their parents and the negative affects it will have on their body. Some people who are pro-choice see abortion as a last resort for a number of situations where they feel abortion is a necessary option, like health reasons. There are many health reasons for which a woman would want to terminate a pregnancy. Women suffering from severe depression disorders may have to stop taking their medications, and this puts both the baby and the mother at risk. The thought of having to care for a child until adulthood could be too much of a burden, and cause a total mental breakdown. Cancer patients should deeply consider the risks of carrying a baby to term with a suppressed immune system, especially if having radiation or chemotherapy. Another substantial reason why a woman would seek an abortion is if she were an alcoholic. If she cannot stop drinking the baby is susceptible to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. This severely inhibits the child’s brain development, and can lead to a loss of motor skills, speech defects, deafness, vision impairment and retardation. Discovery of the fact that the baby may be severely retarded and deformed with many genetic deformations is another reason for a woman to seek an abortion, along with a rape resulting in pregnancy. Of course there is another side to the issue, referred to as pro-life. There are very many people today who say abortion is wrong. They believe that medical and scientific research has long since proved that life begins at fertilization. Therefore, they cannot and do not deny that when you have an abortion you are killing a human being. Most also believe that abortion is against God’s will. If abortion is wrong, then both mother and baby should be protected, unless it is likely that the mother’s life will end from carrying the baby to term. Years ago scientists did not know if it is a “real baby” or a “blob of tissue”. Today we have ultrasounds and other methods that can show us an image of the unborn baby inside the mother’s womb. As early as the 21st day after conception the heart begins to beat. 7 to 10 days later arms and legs are present, and the face makes its first appearance. Blood also flows in the baby’s veins, but stays separate from the mother’s blood. At this stage you feel nothing, but your baby is kicking, clenching his fists, and fanning his toes, and is generally very active. This evidence may prove to some that what is inside you is very much alive.
Some pro-lifers use the surgery done by Joseph Bruner where he repairs a 21 week old unborn baby’s spina bifida as an argument that there is a living, growing, feeling human being long before birth. In this case the child inside the mother reached out through the incision and grabbed the surgeon’s finger. The procedure was completed and the baby was born healthy months later. Another argument is medical research done by Dr. H. M. Liley, the leading expert on the study of babies before birth. His findings indicate that unborn babies can feel pain. Through invading the mother’s womb he discovered that an unborn baby will react to pain in the same fashion that a child would.
The ultimate question still remains. Is abortion wrong or unethical? In my personal opinion, yes it is. 21 days after conception, although about the size of a keychain, there is a fully formed human being. The foundations of the brain, spinal cord and nervous system have been laid. It has arms, legs, a face and a heart that pumps blood through it completely separate from the mother’s heart and blood. I call that a life, and that’s only 21 days. I have to consider what other amazing things will develop in only 20 more. All within the time frame where killing it is perfectly “acceptable”. The only case I could even consider that merits brutally excising a life from a mother’s uterus with a tube that has a knife on the end of it is rape. But the truth is statistics show that rape pregnancy is very rare. Some reports show that conception as a result of rape occurs in less than one percent of cases and others show four percent. The fact that about half of abortions in the U.S. are repeat abortions is not new, but widely underscored. Abortion is not birth control, especially just because it is inconvenient for someone to have to raise a mentally retarded child, or it is simply unwanted. The fact that someone is only allowed to live based on how “wanted” they are is absurd and sort of frightening. There are many problems that can be solved by dispensing unwanted beings, but it is simply inhumane. The only place this concept fits is somewhere like Hitler’s Germany, but the majority of people would agree that solutions like that are not only unethical, but pure evil.

Since abortion nowadays is an unavoidable topic, and since I am a firm believer in being prolife, I will have no problem finding just what I need to make my argument. I know there are those individuals who feel differently, and I will let them feel and think that way because everyone is entitled to their own opinions. However, when a woman decides that she doesn’t want the baby because of personal…

    Ethics on Abortion

There are many ethical issues that are argued over in society. One highly controversial issue however, is the problem faced with opposing beliefs on abortion. Abortion, literally meaning “the deliberate termination of human pregnancy,” is the issue commonly addressed by the liberals and the conservatives. Each side has its own philosophical theory on the situation. The liberal theory suggests that a women has the right to decide what happens with her body. The conservative outlook would be that an unborn baby, as a human being, has separate rights from those of the mother. The arguments that are generally discussed involve that abortion is a personal choice, human life begins at conception, or that abortion can or can not be justified.…

To start, pro-life advocates base their arguments off many factors, one being that babies are viable lives and have rights from the time of conception. As discussed earlier, the embryo, which is an organism in the earliest development stage, contains DNA in its chromosomes when it is concepted. By the fifth week of pregnancy, the embryo is rapidly growing and has now started to develop major organs, such as the heart and brain (Mayo Clinic Staff, par. 11). According to Baby Med, viability of pregnancy is based on the presence of a fetal heart beat, normally rising hCG levels, and the fact that the fetus is alive inside the womb. Baby Med also states that, typically, a hospital considers the 24th week of pregnancy to be the age of viability outside of the womb, though it is known for babies born younger than that to survive (“What Does …”, pars. 2-3). Despite the time mark that a baby can survive outside the womb, all unborn lives should be considered “viable” because as they age, the better chance they have at surviving outside the womb. Most unborn babies develop normally and will eventually develop into a healthy, viable child. Another key argument for the side of pro-life is the availability of alternative options for mothers pregnant with children they do not wish to raise. Adoption is a leading alternative for abortion. Adoption is a great option for mothers who do not want to raise their…

    Abortion: Moral Issues

Some critics believe that abortion is a woman’s choice; others believe that termination of a life even before it is born is still murder. I highly doubt that pro-choice advocates would support their stance if they too believed that abortion was murder, so how then can they justify their pro-choice affiliation? The true question to be asked is when does life actually begin? There would be no questions asked if someone could prove the point at which life begins. However there is a grey area, we do not know when “life” begins. Some believe at conception, others at heartbeat, and others at brain waves. No one can say for sure, I however prefer the stance of “better safe than sorry” when it comes to another possible humans life. The moral issue is determined by one’s belief of the beginning of life, is it murder or is it really just an optional part of a woman’s body that can be removed, like a skin tag. Currently in the United States 1.3 million babies are aborted every year. The leading reasons for abortion today are inadequate funding and lack of readiness for responsibility. These reasons are completely ridiculous when looking at abortion from the pro-life framework of thinking, if it is a human life, then it is murder to abort the baby and therefore no reason for termination can be justified. Abortion is an on-going debate throughout the United States. Americans divide 50% as pro-choice and 44% on pro-life. (Saad, 2015) Majority of women side with pro-choice, and being a woman myself, I stand with pro-choice. I believe that it’s an individual’s right to decide what they’re doing to their bodies, and no one else should be allowed to deny them of said right. There are many different reasons as to why someone would get an abortion. Whether it be from results of rape, birth control failure, teen pregnancy, or whatever the case may be, every abortion is thought out and no option is an easy option.…

Since the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in 1973, abortion has changed its course in society. The case recognized abortion as a fundamental constitutional right and made it legal in all states. Due to the moral, social, and medical dilemmas the abortion issue poses, abortion has been the most debatable subject of controversy in the United States for the past two decades. One who is pro-choice believes that every woman is entitled to the right of privacy in dealing with her own body; if women are to be denied this right, history will repeat itself jeopardizing the lives of millions of women.…

Pro-Choice means that you are for the choice of the woman; for the choice of the irresponsible woman to have her unborn baby removed from her uterus. Both ideologies are reduced to a common point that is, "the life of the baby" or "the life of the mother". The life of the baby directly depends on the choice the mother makes to either terminate the pregnancy or continue it. Although the mental well-being of a woman is discussed, how do you decide what is most traumatic for women in the case of rape? An attempt to restrict any and all abortions would raise not only the percentage of illegal and unsafe abortions but also the costs of the procedure. A new law would need to be enforced with serious consequences to deal with illegal…

Abortion will forever be a topic of interest to millions of people because with a topic so vast, people will always find something to pin point. Whether it be their opinion on when a fetus becomes a human or whether or not the procedure as a whole is ethical. What in particular interests me about abortion is the blatant discardation of so many answers to frequently asked questions. In today’s age, we can easily access information and facilities such as schools with aims of teaching, are essentially useless to anyone who can access the internet. The right to obtain abortions has been a debated topic since the 1800s. It has been the subject of intense Supreme Court litigation and is publically debated during presidential elections. Abortion is defined as ending a pregnancy by removing a fetus from the uterus (“Abortion”). Abortion is also controversial because those who take a stance may have cultural and religious influences. There are many activist groups that argue pro-choice or pro-life. Pro-Life followers argue abortions should be prohibited or have major restrictions if allowed. On the other hand, pro-choice believers argue that women have reproductive rights and it is their free choice on whether they wish to remain pregnant or terminate it (“Abortion, Debate”). There are numerous reasons as to why a woman may choose to end a pregnancy. Women may wish to obtain an abortion because of an unintended pregnancy, young age, social pressure, inability to care for a child, preventing birth defects, protecting the health of the mother, or even to prevent an unwanted pregnancy resulting from a rape. Whatever reason a woman may choose to terminate a pregnancy, they have the fundamental right to do so because a woman’s privacy is protected due to the US Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade…
