The Emperor Of Nihon Ja Analysis
Both books are written by the same author John Flanagan and are in the same series. The Icebound Land takes place around eight years before The Emperor of Nihon-ja (Icebound Land is the third book while the Emperor of Nihon-ja is the tenth book in the series). The Icebound Land takes place immediately after the second book with the two main characters (Will and Evelyn) being captured after trying to burn the bridge in order to destroy the enemy’s main way of transporting armies into their providence/hometown of Araluen. Will (whose last name is a mystery) knows that he’s not going to get out of the situation unscathed/alive, contrary to what Evelyn believes (as she’s Princess Cassandra and her father would most likely pay for her safety). After a few days of rough seas, they finally land in the slave’s yard (where after a few days of being forced to work, Will is drugged) and are brutally put to the test of seeing how hard they can work. Meanwhile, Halt (Will’s instructor) and Horace (Will’s battle school friend) are embarking on a journey to try to rescue both Will and Evelyn as Halt considers Will to be his son and feels like he failed him. As they’re traveling from town to town trying to find Will and Evelyn, they go through different scenarios that slow down their journey (such as beggars and weary, troubled guards). But fortune smiles down upon all four of them as one of the captors respect Will and Evelyn’s bravery during the last book and feels bad for Will’s predicament so he helps Evelyn and Will to escape from the slave yard by giving them a horse, directions to a safe house, and gives small provisions to get them going. The end of the book has Halt encouraging himself and Horace that they’ll find Will and

Arisaka convinces a group of fighters, his followers, and another general and his men that the emperor has broken the law and should therefore step down. Cassandra/Evelyn, Alyss Mainwaring (a diplomat and close friend of everyone in the group), Halt, Horace, Will, and Selethen (the ruler from Arrida) go to help out the Emperor during his crisis (as Horace was sent early on to study battle tactics and was caught in-between the political unrest) and fight Arisaka’s men that takes about two months. During those two months of fighting, Cassandra and Alyss goes to see if another tribe nearby will help the Emperor and will offer support (which they do after solving the tribe’s problem). At the end of the battle, with both sides at an impasse as Arisaka’s men understand that to keep fighting would be fatal. After Arisaka’s true colors are shown to his men, his men refuse to fight the emperor (which causes Arisaka to be so enraged). When Arisaka calls his men cowards and not worthy, Will counteracts this statement and calls General Arisaka not worthy of being general because of how he treats his followers and how he led them without telling them the whole story. Arisaka yells death threats and insults at Will (to which Will responds with an his weapon). After Arisaka’s death, both sides join as one to congratulate the end of the war. The book ends with Horace and Cassandra announcing that Horace proposed to Cassandra last night, heading home (a few days after the
