Universiti Utara Malaysia, The Eminent Management University
The sixth Malaysian public university is Universiti Utara Malaysia or well known as UUM. It was established on 16 Februari 1984 and started it’s academic year with the first batch of students in June . In the early time, the university was located in Bandar Darul Aman, Jitra as a temporary campus with lack of accomodation. After six years of construction, the RM 580 million UUM permanent campus was opened in Sintok ,it was situated along the North South Highway and 18 kilometres from Bukit Kayu Hitam, the border town of Malaysia and Thailand . In the campus there are buildings such as lecture halls, library, convention complex, chancellery, mosque, , sports complex, mall, , and the buildings that house the various departments of the Academic Colleges There are also student residential halls. Beside that, there are also facilities like picnic area, golf course, go-kart circuit, shooting and archery range, equestrian site, and many others . The university was established with the specific mission of providing a leadership role for management education in Malaysia. Thus, the university is also known as a management university with it’s motto “The Eminent Management University “. This specific mission is clearly stated in the university’s objective “ to be the centre of excellence for management education , to be the leading referral centre in all aspects of management scholarship and practice and to be the premier resource centre in the field of management studies “. In January 2008, Universiti Utara Malaysia witnessed a major and historic restructuring exercise where a total of 13 faculties were streamlined and restructured to become three main colleges. According to UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said to date there are another UUM campus in Kuala Lumpur and two UUM offshore offices, in China and Yemen.
