Chapter One The Research and it’s Study |
Introduction:
Urban places were visualized in a modernized and civilized setting. At present, urban places are populated because people from rural places migrate to urban places because of the thinking that they would have a better life. More people mean more consumers which therefore mean more wastes. Improper accumulation of wastes invites insects which usually carry germs, microbes, bacteria and the like. It makes a perfect environment for the disease-causing organisms to live in.
A mosquito is an example of an insect that are attracted by decomposing wastes and garbage. They have been found to carry the pathogens that causes dengue and malaria as well as over 40 other bacteria (like salmonella) or viruses that can cause disease. They transfer from garbage to another until it is full and satisfied. Usually, dirt clings to its body which eventually leaves marks on the surfaces it touches. The dirt contains thousands of microbes that are the cause of illness.
Today, mosquitoes are major nuisance and hazard to the public health of the cities.
Garlic (Allium sativum linn) is also known to have insecticidal property. Garlic is such a useful ingredient as a garden insecticide due to the presence of sulfur volatiles. Garlic is effective against so many pests and diseases that different strengths may need to be experimented with. It already used by a number of people as insecticide here and abroad.
By using garlic, the proponents can produce an effective insect repellent since garlic has insecticidal properties. By using it, there will be a more efficient and powerful action of the product that are intended to repel mosquitoes.

The primary motive for farmers switching from chemicals to garlic is because it is natural, cheap and has natural characteristics of fungicides and insecticides. The most common pesticide made from garlic is garlic spray, which controls a variety of organisms including termites, ants, caterpillars and slugs. The plants will only need to be sprayed once a week because of the long-lasting taste of garlic. This should not be applied close to harvesting time, seeing that this could affect the food flavors. Another strategy developed by agribusiness farmers to control nematodes is known as the drench. Garlic tea is used as a soil drench and effectively keeps Japanese beetles and carrot beetles out. Additionally it repels deer and rabbits from flowers in gardens. Lastly, simply growing garlic in between other plants can reduce insect damage as long as it is not planted near potatoes, peas or legumes. By using garlic as an insecticide in one of these three ways, it is certain that there will be no harm to the environment, unlike traditional…

An insect repellent is a substance applied to any surface(surface where they live or hide) which discourages insects from landing or climbing on that surface. Effective insect repellents can protect you from serious mosquito- and tick-borne diseases. In the United States, mosquitoes can transmit diseases like St. Louis encephalitis and West Nile virus. Ticks can transmit serious diseases like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Ehrlichiosis.…

In this Investigatory project, we will learn how to make a natural insect repellent. All of the ingredients are organic and can be found at home. The main ingredients that will be used in this project such as the lemon grass, garlic and eucalyptus oil are known to be effective in keeping those pesky arthropods away. Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a natural and effective mosquito repellent. It contains the natural oil, citronella, which is safe and effective. Garlic, on the other hand, is also an effective repellent because of its smell. Lastly, Eucalyptus oil contains chemicals that repels mosquitos and kills fungus.…

    Garlic to Mosquito

Mosquitoes have almost no olfactory powers whatsoever--they have, in fact, a very selective and narrow olfactory "spectrum". But this is actually irrelevant; you see, the way a mosquito "repellent" works is NOT by being detected and driving insects away, but by blocking their ability to smell things that otherwise would attract them, so they ignore you. (In the same way, household "deodorizers" don't actually eliminate odors, but merely block your ability to smell them.) In the case of mosquitoes, the primary attractants that have been identified are CO2 and lactic acid, though there are other factors. The best substance yet found to block mosquitoes' powers of detection is DEET, and while a few repellents are equal over a short term, nothing even comes close in terms of residual repellency; DEET's effects can last for several hours, whereas even the best alternative repellents last at most about 2 hours, maybe 3, if you're lucky and the conditions are right. Garlic is only one of a list of plant compounds with similar "repellent" effects, including citronella, cedar, verbena, geranium, lavender, pine, cinnamon, rosemary, basil, thyme, allspice, and peppermint. But again, these substances have a very limited efficacy, in terms of duration, and if you are going to be exposed to mosquitoes for more than an hour or two, you should get a good DEET-based spray or lotion and stick with it. Products with 10% to 35% DEET should be fine under most conditions, and anything over 50% is overkill, except in unusual circumstances in which insect biting pressures are truly intense, or under conditions of very high temperature and humidity (e.g., working in a tropical jungle - and I know this from first-hand experience!). Repellents with DEET may damage plastics (such as watch faces, eyeglasses and frames), spandex, leather, and painted surfaces, but don't damage natural fibers (cotton or wool) or nylon. Most importantly, there is no…

blood of people and animals. They have more than 2,000 species and they can live in any type of climate and temperature even in very cold areas. Although all of us know mosquitoes are “attracted” or they need blood to live, they are more attracted to people’s blood when the person is wearing a dark clothing and when a person is eating or just ate a banana. A lot of people ask doctors why mosquitoes are dangerous or deadly, and the reason is that some of them carry Dengue. We all know that Dengue is a deadly virus caused by a mosquito. Many people die because of taking the bite of the mosquito for granted that is why we need mosquito repellants to avoid being bitten.…

An insecticide is a substance used by humans to gain some advantage in the struggle with various insects that are considered “pests”. In the sense used here, a pest insect is considered undesirable, from the human perspective, because: (a) it is a vector that transmits disease causing pathogens to humans (such as those causing malaria or yellow fever), or other diseases to livestock or crop plants; or (b) it causes a loss of the productivity or economic value of crop plants, domestic animals, or stored foodstuffs. The abundance and effects of almost all insect pests can be managed through the judicious use of insecticides.…

The study was conducted because the garlic contains powerful compounds such as allicin which garlic releases are inimical to mosquitoes. They have therefore evolved to avoid garlic. Another possibility is that the strong smell of garlic overwhelms the mosquito's sense of smell. Allicin does not occur in "ordinary" garlic, it is produced when garlic is finely chopped or crushed. The finer the chopping and the more intensive the crushing, the more allicin is generated and the stronger the medicinal effect.…
