ABSTRACT
A review of relevant research reveals studies dating back to the early 1970s that focus on facility-based environmental cues, or atmospherics, and their effect on shopper attitude and decision modeling. However, inadequately explored is the specific effect that storefronts and retail exteriors have on shopper choice. Through the use of cross-sectional consumer surveys, this study will measure the importance of storefront appearance on retail patronage, as well as rank aspects of retail exteriors as they relate to shopper selection and loyalty. In addition to measuring the importance of storefront appearance, this article will determine how to prioritize physical aspects of retail facades that make the greatest impact on shopper approach behavior.

Chapter 1 Introduction
Background
Because the façade is the first impression shoppers get of an establishment, the decision to patronize or not begins outside the place of business, sometimes yards from the entrance. However, very little research in the field of atmospherics has served to specifically address the external variables that function to draw customers into an establishment, be it a grocery store, a restaurant, or a convenience store. This research project investigates what factors are most likely to trigger the “approach” behavior that draws shoppers into a

    When shopping at the store, the customer goes through five different steps in their shopping experience. The company calls this process the “customer journey,” consisting of the following stages: Enter, Browse, Try-on, Check-out, and Walk-out.     Firstly, as can be known, situational influences are basically five factors that affect customers when they want to make buying decision. One of the most visible features that may have a direct impact on their decisions is physical surrounding like store location, interior decoration, music, smell, temperature and amount of choice provided. This factor would be used as a tactic to attract customers or keep them stay longer in stores. For example, these days, Coles and Woolworth have had almost same price and promotion for their customers so most people have chosen to shop in one of these because that is simply the nearest supermarket from their house. In addition, how companies decorate their shops, what kind of music they play and which fragrance they choose to use in their stores or products play a prominent role to approach their potential clients. According to Belk (1975)’s study, there is a relationship between store’s atmosphere and purchasing outcome that means the more enjoyable atmosphere the store have, the more money their customers are apparently willing to spend (as cited in Anic and Radas, 2006). Moreover, when they spend more time to stay inside, it may lead to a chance that they would buy unplanned goods.
