The Dying Sun
Q1. How is it that a star seldom finds another star near it?
Ans. There are countless stars wandering in space. They are so big that millions of earths can be packed inside them. But the space around them is so huge that a star is like a lonely ship in an ocean. Therefore, a star seldom finds another star near it.
Q2. What happened, when according to Sir James Jeans, a wandering star, wandering through space, came near the sun?
Ans. When a wandering star came near the sun, it raised a tide on the solar surface just as the moon raises tides in the sea. But that tide was so too big to imagine. It was huge because it was raised by a very gigantic star on a very large surface of the sun.
Q3. What happened when the star came nearer and nearer?
Ans. It is believed that when the wandering star came near the sun, it raised a tidal wave on the solar surface. As it came nearer and nearer, the tide grew larger and larger until it became a big mountain.
Q4. What are planets and how did they come into existence?
Ans. When the mountain of wave grew larger on the solar surface, the wandering star moved away. The tidal pull had become so powerful that the mountain broke into pieces. These pieces scattered into the space. They are called planets.
Q5. Why is there no life on stars?
Ans. Moderate temperature is an essential condition for life to exist. If temperature is high, life burns up. If it is low, life freezes. Stars are very hot like collection of fires. Due to this, life on them is impossible. It exists only on earth where temperature is neither too high nor too cold.
Q6. Write a note on the beginning of life on earth?
Ans. Scientists believe that somehow one of the planets cooled down. Initially, life came started in the form of a simple organism which could reproduce. Gradually, it became more and more complex. In the end, man came into being. Man has his feelings, plans, faith and aesthetic sense.
Q7. Why is the universe so frightening?

Our Solar System INT1 TASK 1 The Evolution of our Solar System • Observations of the stars, sun, and planets appearing to revolve around the Earth, which seem to be at motionless, lead ancient astronomers to believe the Earth was the center of the solar system. • Claudis Ptolemy’s version of the Geocentric Model was the most widely accepted and recognized example of the Geocentric Model. • Nicolaus Copernicus published a book on his theory of a heliocentric system, the book, De revolutionibus orbium coelstium, puts the Sun at the center of the Solar System with planets revolving around it. It also pointed out that the Earth was in motion and that motion could explain the Retrograde motion of the planets.…

    2. How did Earth form? The Earth is thought to have been formed about 4.6 billion years ago by collisions in the giant disc-shaped cloud of material that also formed the Sun. Gravity slowly gathered this gas and dust together into clumps that became asteroids and small early planets called planetesimals.…

There have been a variety of theories that have been proposed to explain the formation of the Solar system. Some theories have been the tidal theory, collision theory, etc. There is not a single theory that explains it all, but there is only one that has been accepted ("Astronomy” n.pag.). The nebular hypothesis or nebular theory, is the best descriptive model for the formation of the Solar System. This theory was first proposed by two Europeans, Pierre Laplace and Immanuel Kant. Kant’s essential idea was that the Solar System started as a cloud of dispersed particles. He assumed that since the particles had common gravitational attractions, that would cause them to start colliding and moving, at which point they would remain attached together because of the chemical forces. As some of these masses became greater than others, they grew still more rapidly,…

Our planet was developed within the process of evolution - step by step. Millions of suns originate in the nebula and disperse into the space. When we see them on the night sky, we call them the stars. On their long way across the space planets were created from the stardust around them, like around our Sun. Millions of years passed until life could be developed…
