CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Background

INTRODUCTION
The Filipinos are one of the most updated in terms of social networking. Social networking websites provide mediums for users to express themselves beyond physical features and labels, to share experiences, discuss interests and influence one another in a selected network.
The largest social network in the world is Facebook. It is owned and operated by Facebook INC; launched on February 2004. Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook with his college roommates and fellow computer science students, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moiskoitz and Chris Hughes while he was student at Harvard University. This sites can be used towards work related contexts and connecting those with common interest. Members may use this site to mingle with people they already know, and to find new friends.
In our country 93.3% of Filipinos were using Facebook. Data released on September 2009 show the Philippines ranked number 13 in terms of Facebook users with 4,832,040 registered users. In Asia, Philippines second only to Indonesia. According to statistical monitor, the largest age group is over 18-24 years old with total of 11,730,180.
In particular students are the main class of Facebook users who spend long hours on social networking. Students did not focus on the effects of it, but only their enjoyment purposes which had worried by parents and educational authorities about their academic performance.
This study would give some information and ideas especially to the student, they will be able to know the advantages and disadvantages of Facebook to them.
