The Disadvantage of Home Schooling
The Disadvantages of Homeschooling Homeschooling is when students are educated at home by parents or tutors rather than attending public or private school. Many parents home school their children to keep them sheltered from the environment and the world. I believe homeschooling should only be an option in extreme situations because there are numerous disadvantages. The three major disadvantages are the lack of resources, the lack of patience from parents, and the lack of socialization with peers. Students that are homeschooled are not necessarily entitled to the resources that students attending public or private school may have. An article titled “The Advantages and Disadvantages of Homeschooling” states, “The theory is that schools will have better books, and the teachers will have a better education than the parent does, and it could serve as a disadvantage if the parent is not ready and willing to be the go-to person for everything.” Teachers, librarians, students, and textbooks are all considered resources, and most home schooled students do not have accessibility to this multitude of resources. This could become a problem with the child’s learning. I believe it is more effective if students can use their peers and other people to better understand what is being taught, and if homeschoolers are being taught by the same person that is limiting them to one perspective. Parents also have to come out of pocket for most of the materials needed for their child to learn. The cost of these items can also become a burden for the family of a child that is homeschooled. Parents that take on the role as their child’s teacher have to be very patient. Students are easily discouraged when he or she cannot master a subject or a specific lesson in school. As a teacher, the parent has to be sure that they do not become frustrated because they have to fill their role as the teacher.
