The Difference between Male and Female Friendships
The Differences between Male and Female Friendships
There is no doubt that women and men are different, they act differently, they dress differently, and they express their ways of friendships differently. “The Differences Between Male and Female Friendships” written by Ellen Goodman and Patricia O’Brien is an article that explores the gender gap when it comes to friendship. I agree with the article that when it comes to friendships between males and females there is a difference between how friendship is articulated.
Friendship can be better explained by the phrase “while women tend to be together, men tend to do together” written by Goodman and O’Brien. Friendship with women is often like having another sister. Women tend to be more closely knit, open to talking about anything, and generally more affectionate. Their friendships are based on shared feelings. Women value and rely on their friendships because they can share everything with each other. Though, they criticize one another more they still can feel more accepted within their peer groups.
Men are on a whole other spectrum. Common interests and shared activities are what drive a male’s friendship. Men tend to do things in groups, like watching a football game. This will feel like an act of bonding. They could sit through a football game yelling at the T.V. and not once bring up that they could be worried about something and they are fine with that. Men lay down their friendship with activities and are comfortable with silence.
Friendship is the bond between people and that is important for happiness. Though men and women may not express their friendships the same, all in all they both have a general concept on the mechanism of friendship. Brothers in arms and sisters to the end are how male and female friendships could be viewed.

Men typically create and experience friendships while engaging in actions that cultivate a sense of camaraderie and companionship, such as watching or playing sports or working on handicrafts or fix-it projects. Because masculine socialization discourages the communication of emotion, men perceive more likely to help each other with their problems by creating distractions rather than by communicating about difficulties in an explicit matter. Male same-sex friends communicate intimacy in an indirect, nonverbal manner by engaging in friendly competition and affection punches and backslapping. Unlike female same-sex friends, men typically refrain from directly discussing their…

Different cultures hold different perspectives toward a relationship between a man and a woman. Some people say that a woman and a man cannot be plainly friends; however, others do believe in the existence of such relationship. In the article written by William Deresiewicz, “A man, a woman, just friends,” some opinions root out in the support of one idea. In the article, William Deresiewicz uses an example of a movie known as When Harry Met Sally to explain his opinion against man-woman friendship. However, this paper adopts the thesis that a man and a woman can be friends and nothing more. In my opinion, women and men can be just friends without any further…

In this chapter, Floyd (2011) discusses the many ways that gender affects interpersonal relationships. He describes is as a “defining feature of our identity, shaping the way we think, look, and communicate” (p. 51). It is explained that each gender culture puts emphasis on different parts of the relationship. Women come to value communication and closeness, while men value taking part in activities together (Floyd, 2011, p. 57). This makes sense when I think about how I communicate with men versus with women.…

Tannen stated that she observed that, "For males, conversation is the way you negotiate your status in the group and keep people from pushing you around; you use talk to preserve your independence. Females, on the other hand, use conversation to negotiate closeness and intimacy; talk is the essence of intimacy, so being best friends means sitting and talking. For boys, activities, doing things together, are central. Just sitting and talking is not an essential part of friendship. They're friends with the boys they do things with." I completely agree with her statement. Males, in my opinion, speak more sternly to try and prove themselves to other males. While females speak more calm and subtle to try to create a bond with other females.…

Ladies first. Female friends are always there when you need to talk, or when you just want to have some fun and go crazy. If one correctly follows the concrete-set stereotype employed by society, girls are your emotion go getters. Break out the chocolate therapy and chick flicks, because if you’re in a ditch and seek some advice, this is your girl friend’s kryptonite. Come to her with your problems and she’d be listening with all ears and an open heart, willing to do all that she can to make you smile again, even if this may require a few white lies once in a blue moon. Girls are also typically more stuck up than your average guy pal. In other terms, a girl’s tendency to overreact to minute situations leads to three results- drama; gossip, and cat fighting. Movies and books throughout the world such as “Mean Girls” or Twilight, are perfect examples of how real life females can get. Not to say that they can’t be just as powerful as a loving friends, but if their button is pushed just a…

Friendship is a very powerful word. As children are growing up, their parents and family give them a taste of what friendship really is all about. Starting at a young age, it is smart for parents to teach children the significance of friendship. A friend should be someone who tells the other individual when they are doing wrong. They should influence them to do good, give them a shoulder to cry on, and be that person to talk to when sad. Friendships change over time as you move from childhood to adulthood, however, friendship exists in the positive relationships a person builds.…
