Leadership and Management are two terms that are often used interchangeably, or else used in very close relation with each other. But leadership is something that is difficult to define, because it is a word that can be defined in a number of different ways. Broadly speaking, however, leadership refers to the ability of an individual to influence a group of subordinate individuals to behave according to a certain manner, and the methods used to motivate those individuals to work together in order to attain a particular goal (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2000, p.4). Leaders, in other words, are innovators, they are men and women of vision, who take risks to inspire and to do the right thing. Management, meanwhile, is more concerned with organization, efficiency, oversight of employees - the more day-to-day activities involved in the running of an organization and in making sure that the organization and its employees are doing things right (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2000, p.8)…

Before appointing a leader and manager into a corporation, each title must be classified to set expectations, specific duties, and roles. Without a clear definition of the each title and their position in the company the role of manager and leader may become indistinguishable. While leadership is frequently related with people in management positions, it should be noted that the titles are not necessarily one and the same. With the manager position come the duties of planning and overseeing group day-to-day activities. Most managers’ primary function is to focus on the…

This means that managers do things by the book and follow company policy, while leaders follow their own intuition, which may in turn be of more benefit to the company. A leader is more emotional than a manager. "Men are governed by their emotions rather than their intelligence". This quotation illustrates why teams choose to follow leaders.…

Dwight Eisenhower provided an excellent quotation on leadership; “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” A leader is one who goes first or possesses authority to direct such as in a chief or commander. However, a leader cannot be defined singularly, nor can all the factors that produce a leader be measured tangibly. A manager is defined as one who handles, controls, or directs, especially one who directs a business or other enterprise. By definition, a leader and manager are similar and a manager is a leadership role in an organization. Leaders can be managers, but managers are not necessarily leaders. Managers that have a good foundation as positive leaders hold key attributes, such as effective communicators, integrity, trustworthiness, respect and credibility.…

Leaders set goals and new direction, challenging the status quo. They are visionaries and spearhead the team, motivating and leading them to reach this new direction. Managers on the other hand maintain the status quo, specializing on conformance to the standard, and managing teams and individuals around these boundaries that have already been established, systematizing and directing to achieve the task set. Management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals. Good managers do those things both effectively and efficiently. (Giang, V. (n.d.).…

Much has been written about the difference between management and leadership. In the past, competent management staffs ran effective companies. In light of our ever-changing world, however, most companies have come to realize that it is much more important to lead than to manage. In today's world the old ways of management no longer work. One reason is that the degree of environmental and competitive change we are experiencing is extreme. Although exciting, the world is also very unstable and confused. In an article entitled What's the Difference between Your Hospital and the Other? Gary Campbell states that the difference between a manager and a leader is that the manager "finds himself quite willing to take risk, but seemingly afraid to take the risk of being different." That being true, a manager will always be reactive instead of proactive. A true leader will be proactive. He will embrace change and will look for ways to differentiate himself and his company from the competition.…
