Gothic literature is a type of writing that is characterized by the elements of fear, death, and gloom. Edgar Allan Poe's “The Fall of the House of Usher” is a good example of Gothic Lit because it uses the factors of a spooky home, the weather is bad, and there is a ghost or a monster. “He suffered from a morbid acuteness of the senses; the most insipid food was alone endurable.(18)” This sentence is tied to gothic literature because he is in a old house and he is going crazy. Therefore…
‘The woman’ of the poem has no specific identity and this helps us even further see the situation in which the woman is experiencing, the lost of one’s identity. Questions start to be raised and we wonder if Harwood uses this character to portray her views of every woman which goes into the stage of motherhood, where much sacrifice is needed one being the identity that was present in society prior to children.…
The texts Monster written and performed by 4 members of the DC slam team, Dance with the Devil composed by Immortal Technique, Blindside directed by John Lee Hancock, and Divergent directed by Neil Burger, studied the connecting idea of influences across life in varying ways. An important lesson that was found was that our cultural capital can influence our choices and the way we see and value things in life. Secondly, it is our choice on whether we let our past and cultural capital be the barrier that stops us from seeing things from a new and broader perspective.…
The Jersey Devil, also known as Leeds Devil is a creature that is described as a kangaroo like creature with the head of a goat, rough bat wings, horns, small arms with sharp clawed hands, divided hooves and a split, v- shaped tail. The Jersey Devil, was born in Philadelphia Bulletin, United States, in the region of Pine Barrens, New Jersey on January 1909. The surprise of The Jersey Devil’s mother being pregnant with him, and him being the thirteenth child was a even a bigger surprise to her. She did not want to have another child, she did not want to have thirteen children. Twelve was enough for her and adding one more child to that count drove her crazy. She did not want anything to do with it. His mother did not care for him as she cared for her other twelve children she had.…
We no longer believe that some subjects are more appropriate for literary treatment than others: nowadays, every human activity, no matter how banal or disgusting, offers itself as legitimate material for the imagination to work on and turn into art…. There seem to be some subjects, however, which have a built-in intransigence to literary treatment because their historical reality, overwhelmingly banal, perhaps, or overwhelmingly disgusting, surpasses anything that the creative imagination can make of them. Writers instinctively shun these topics, it seems to me, and rightly so. It takes considerable nerve, therefore, to do what Timothy Findley has done [in The Wars]—to write a novel squarely about the unspeakable reality of the 1914–18 war in order to make that reality even more unspeakably real. Having read it, we're meant to put his book down angered and disgusted once again by the sheer…
When the topic of Gothic literature is discussed most readers immediately think of vampire stories, tales of horror, terror and supernatural tales, but the use of Gothic in poetry also has enhanced the images within works of poetry such as "The Poor Singing Dame" and "The Lady of Shallot". While the longer stories can elaborate upon the defining characteristics of the genre, the poet can create the same chilling fantasies with limited words as seen in the Gothic style poems.…
In Elizabeth Bowen’s “The Demon Lover”, a forty-four year old woman returns to her old house to retrieve things she had to leave behind to escape from war. War is a constant theme throughout the story. War took away, what he remembers to be, her first love, and it drove her, her husband and her three sons away from their London home. In the beginning of the story, the protagonist, Mrs. Drover, is just returning to her old home from the country side. She doesn’t think anything out of order, until she sees a letter addressed to her. This was one of the first things Bowen uses to create suspense. Another thing she uses is the fact that the house is empty, but she doesn’t feel alone.…
It is weird and oddly strange when a description of the devil or also know as “Satan” in Dante’s Inferno, Dante gives the description of Satan as being a frozen three headed hairy being with a tremendous huge width of bat wings .…

In the 1600’s, the idea of having sex with demons was intriguing because it corresponded with knowledge of the supernatural world. The concept of having sex with demons was also highly interesting because if there was a fear of demons that meant there was angels and Gods. In the context of demonic sex with the 20th century, it could correspond with sadomasochism. Though in the 1600’s people stated they had no choice in the matter when having sex with demons, within sadomasochism the main statement tied with it is that it must be safe, sane and consensual. The dramatic changes in even just the positions of sex since the 1600’s shows the change of view about sex as a whole. Within the 1600’s the idea of sex with demons terrified people, causing…

Love, lust, murder, thievery, incest, death, and betrayal are just some of the intriguing, beautiful, and sometimes disturbing topics of a traditional ballad. A traditional what? A ballad is…
Howe presents her poems as “meditations on matter and spirit” (801). She intends to explore both “the mysteries of interior life and the weight of the material world” (801). These ideas are similar to Dickinson’s theme of her inner world. However, Howe does not emphasize death and dread to the extent of Dickinson. She embodies the postmodernist rejection of the “Modernist despair and sense of tragic loss”.…
Civilizations in the beginning, separated by distance and utterly unaware of other inhabitants, developed without influence from one another. However, despite this fact, cultures all around the world bear striking similarities. The word ‘demon’ stems from the original Greek word ‘daimon’ which does not carry the negative connotation of malevolence it does today. The term ‘demon’ first started to be associated with evil and the devil in the Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible (Source; Ankarloo). When looking at cultures and religions throughout the globe, each has their own interpretation of God-fearing, corrupted creatures. Societies throughout the ages, separated by miles of land and unconquerable oceans each have literature, fiction, folklore, myths, etc. telling the story of demons. Each religion has its own portrayal of demonic spirits. Aspects woven into the stories and the entities themselves that are adapted to that region of the world and that religions beliefs. Demons around the world reflect the similarities as well as portray the differences, showcasing the morals of various cultures.…
The Second chapter of Susan Hills chilling novel, The Woman In Black, is host to some of the conventional gothic aspects found in such ghost stories. The focus of this essay is the first eight paragraphs of the second chapter. Story telling lies at the heart of this novel and there is definite mix within the story of new and old ghost stories which would allow Susan Hill to select what she would have thought to be essential components of a successful ghost narrative. ‘A London Particular’ imparts a strong sense of place, mood, season and of the elements to the point that our main character, Arthur Kipps, is very effected by the various scenarios; whether it be sunny in the open or dark and cloudy. These senses mean the traditional ‘haunting’ fundamentals; an isolated house, narrow empty streets at night (lonely churchyards and convents later on), are heavily relied upon.…
