The Definition Of Volunteerism

Good morning ,teacher! My name is Luo ZheYuan,I am from Zhejiang province ,China.It's my honor to speak here,and I am very glad to share my topic with you. Then today I'd like to talk something about volunteerism In my presentation i will introduce the definition and background of volunteerism and display some data to prove the development of volunteerism.I also will analyse the effects of volunteerism and summarize my result. The definition of volunteerism:
Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote good or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling of self-worth and respect. There is no financial gain involved. The background and history of volunteerism:
In 18th century the word was first recorded during the 1630s. The word volunteering has more recent usage—still predominantly military—coinciding with the word community service.
In 19th century During this time, America experienced the Great Awakening. People became aware of the disadvantaged and realized the cause for the movement against slavery. Younger people started helping the needy in their communities
In modern societies,it is increasingly popular that people volunteer on weekends in the local community service center to help the people in need

The data to show level of volunteer:
American:According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, 61.8 million individuals in the United States contributed 8 billion hours of volunteerism in 2008 alone. The economic value of all this volunteering was $162 billion U.S. dollars.To put that in context, this is roughly equivalent to the 2008 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Egypt. And that's just U.S. volunteers

United Nations:during 2008-2009 more than 3000 UNV volunteers supported peacekeeping and special political and peacebuding operations annually.Serving in 19 UN mission in 18 countries.they constituted some 30 per cent of all international civilian persannel involved in these missions

Factors
1: Parents often aim to teach their children values such as compassion, kindness, understanding, and caring .In some families,both father and mother are volunteers so that their children will received the education of volunteerism.their children want to be volunteer
2.some school encouraged their students participate in some volunteer activities and study relevant knowledge of volunteerism.For example,Resource poor schools around the world rely on government support, or on efforts from volunteers and private donations, in order to run effectively. In some countries, whenever the economy is down, the need for volunteers and resources increases greatly. There are many opportunities available in school systems for volunteers

3.Government and some organizations initiate and enough volunteerism.An international work-camp is an international voluntary project in which participants from different countries can meet, live, work, learn, and exchange with local people concerning issues about environmental conservation, cultural heritage, social justice, rural and human development, etc. Groups including CCIVS, NVDA

4.with development of media,students can obtain a great of information about volunteerism though internet , newspaper,TY and so on.

Development of volunteerism in China. . Under the pressure of social challenges and social risks, the Chinese government gradually realized the importance of voluntary service and created a series of measures to encourage and support the volunteerism development. In fact, volunteer service, especially in Beijing Olympics Games, has profoundly influenced social development in China. The influences on volunteers include encouraging good citizenship. In terms of social development, volunteer service helps optimizing the structure of human resources, expanding public participation, ensuring public security and building a harmonious society.

I would like to discuss Effects of volunteerism
Positive:
1:Children will have a chance meet news friends and master more knowledge though communicate with other people.Much like the benefits of any type of volunteering there are great rewards for the volunteer, student, and school. In addition to intangible rewards, volunteers can add relevant experience to their resumes. Volunteers who travel to assist may learn foreign culture and language.a
2: Volunteering can have a significant impact on the world, but also can be an excellent teaching opportunity — a great way to actively model good citizenship and community engagement for the next generation.
3:These volunteerism activities can aroused children’s sense of responsibility and dedication.while,these activties will forster their ability of self-management.volunteering is leveraging the specialized skills and talents of individuals to strengthen the infrastructure of nonprofits, helping them build and sustain their capacity to successfully achieve their missions.
3.participating in volunteer activities will enrich their social experience and enlarge their outlook.
4.Building excellent relationship with other people.people will recept each other and mutual understanding.
5. volunteering is helpful to promote the spontaneous social and philanthropic awareness of students.
Negative:
1:some people pay attention to volunteerism and igron their jobs,even their family and friend.they spend a lot of time devote social and are willing to help other people,but their family fall victim to these volunteer job.
2: Sometime the volunteers is very dangerous.But quite soon after a disaster, individual responses can also lead to the unnecessary duplication of efforts and can run into significant viability problems.
In my conclusion,I would like to mentioned three aspect,Firstly,the summary is volunteerism may be defined as contributing one's time or talents for charitable, educational, social, political, or other worthwhile purposes, usually in one's community, freely and without regard for compensation.Next ,I ‘d like to suggest some recommendation that government and a varies of organizations should create more chance and activities to young people,and for my prediction i would like to say more and more people will join in volunteerism in the future.
