The Death of Jay Gatsby The responsibility of a murder is not always completely traced back to the killer. Sometimes, there is a person who directly, or indirectly, motivates the murder. The killing of Jay Gatsby is not excluded. His murder could have been prevented if a few instances were a little different. Interestingly enough, Daisy Buchannan accounts for three strong points as to why she should be held responsible for the death of Gatsby. The events that made Gatsby's murder a reality are that Daisy did not stop the car that hit Myrtle and take responsibility for her death, Daisy's lack of marrying Gatsby, and her selfish character itself. Though none of these contributed to the actual murder of Gatsby, all points have the strongest potential of altering the final outcome. The most direct way Daisy contributed to the killing of Jay Gatsby is simply that she did not stop her car after she hit Myrtle. If she drew up the courage to stop after the accident, the situation would have ended in them being charged for manslaughter and receiving a reasonable amount of time in prison. The main reason that George yielded to a murderous rage is because the killer did not pull over or reveal himself later. Gatsby explained to Nick that he had attempted to make Daily stop the car, but she continued to drive. “Daisy stepped on it. I tried to make her stop but she could not so I pulled on the emergency brake…” Although they still were able confess after the incident, Jay knew that if he went back he would upset Daisy, and that is something he absolutely could not do. Jay's murder shows that despite of the extent of his love for Daisy, they were not destined to end up together. This fate could have been a little different if Daisy had better priorities. In other words, if Daisy did not care as much about her image or wealth, she and Gatsby would have most likely rekindled their relationship immediately after he come home from the war. Daisy herself
