The Day That Changed My Life
It was the month of November and the year was 2008. I did not plan on going to the hospital on this day but my mother received a phone call. That one call was my reason for being waken up at 4 a.m. listening to my mom as she reused me to get dressed. One call changed my life forever. A person from the hospital called and said that my grandmother was not breathing normally. After we got to the hospital we find out that the cancer she was diagnosed with has affected her breathing, which caused tubes to be placed in her to make sure she stays alive. I remember hearing all these doctors and nurses ask me and my family to make decisions on the plans for my grandmother. I was only fifteen years old so I did not understand what was really going on. As I watched by my grandmother’s bedside, all I could see was a person who was the strongest person I knew be forced to be weak for the moment. Her skin color remained the same but her eyes never opened. As much as I reassured her that I would be by her side I was scared that she did not hear me since she never woke up. At one point, one of my grandmother’s sisters told me that she was actually having a conversation with God and that is why her eyes will not open. Sitting at her bedside gave me nothing but to time to reminisce on how she made an impact on my life.

From the time I was born my grandma has been the truest friend I know. She has witnessed every life event that was special to me from the first day of kindergarten to my 8th grade graduation and even more. Once I got to high school I found myself being introduced to more obstacles but I always knew that I could call on my grandmother when I felt like I could not overcome them. I remember specifically when I was the age of fourteen just beginning my sophomore year of high school and I got my first C on my report card. The grade upset me causing me to put myself down but the person who quickly picked me up was my grandmother telling me that

My mother tells me I am just like my grandmother. I love helping others, hearing their problems and giving insight. My grandmother, she would listen and give advice and she helped me learn a lot of things about myself that I never knew. I am writing this essay, but all I can think about is how much her personality captivated me to be who I am today and that I want to make people feel better about themselves. I want that more than anything. I want to motivate. I want to help someone find the light at the end of a dark tunnel. I want to listen and learn from people dealing with struggles, help them…

We all face major hardships in our life, but I’ve met very few that have gone through as many as my grandma has. Being born into a world of war and terror is simply unimaginable, but my grandma had to go through it all. Never seeing what life is truly supposed to be like seems depressing, and not knowing when it will end seems even more. My grandma may argue that for her it wasn’t that bad because she didn’t know that life could be any better and was accustomed to living in a war, but from an outside point of view I will never really understand. At the end of the day, this strong woman pulled through and was able to find success. Looking back at her past, my grandma says that she is grateful for the opportunities she was given. My grandma had to go through all the phases of a hero’s journey including the departure, the initiation, and the return.…

Even to this day, I don't know how my grandma had so much love for someone who she could barely remember. Yet, since my grandma's condition was bad I naturally helped out my family with my great grandma. I would bring in and out sodas for her since she had a mad addiction to the fizzy drink, and sometimes I would bring her hot meals. Even though doing all of that was great, my favorite thing to do for her was to keep her company. On the most beautiful of days, we would go out and sit on the neon yellow swing set in front of our house in early afternoons when the leaves were turning a beautiful shade of brown and the weather was just the right temperature. The wind sang alluring songs in your ears as the branches of the lush trees danced to the melody. I can picture it just like it was yesterday. The pond next to us glimmered a light blue color as the swing squeaked in glee. She would sing the same tune each time and i would drift into a world of peace and tranquility where nothing else mattered at that moment. But as a little girl, I took those special moments for granted. I was too oblivious to know that good things don't last forever, they never…

When I was seven, during second grade, my grandpa was diagnosed with stomach cancer. At the time I did not have much knowledge of what cancer even was, but I sure do now. All I knew was that my grandpa was sick and he started going to the doctors very frequently. I was close with my Grandma and Grandpa Starz, my dad’s parents. We lived just down the street from them a couple houses down. I would spend weekends and the summer over at their house around the age of five to seven while my parents were at work, doing things from working in the garden picking green beans and tomatoes with them to going to church with my Grandma on Sundays. Life went on just the same as usual for my seven-year-old self. I remember going to Christian Hospital with…

“If you ever wonder why bad things happen to good people, it’s because God knows they’re capable of handling it.” Reading this quote makes me think of someone who was very special in my life, because she was able to handle things anyone else might think are unbearable. That person was my grandma Marilyn Doyle. She had many influences on me, a few are how she had such an open heart, was very accepting, and she was very confident in what she believed in. It’s incredibly difficult to put into words how much she really meant to me. She had a genuine smile, which flashes into my head every time I think of her. She was a very strong-willed, independent, and a loving person. Although I didn’t get to spend as much time with her as I would have liked to, I felt as though we had a very special relationship.…

The summer before sixth grade I attended sleep away camp in upstate New York. I had a great time up there, however I returned home to some grim news. While I was away my great aunt had gotten pneumonia, and was very ill. She was one hundred and one years old at the time, and she had been nearing the end for quite a while by that point. This, however, seemed to be the final stretch and I was told that there was a chance that the upcoming weekend could be the last time that I would ever see her. My family had planned to travel out to visit her the following weekend and asked if I had wanted to come as well. Throughout the years I had grown very close to her, as we spent many family events together. I cherish my memories of spending time with her at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wanted to see her one last time to value all the time that I had left so I decided to go with my family.…

They told us what I had and that if we had waited even two more hours they don’t know if they could’ve saved me. I remember my mom staying in the hospital with me, I would tell her I would be okay.
