The day in the woods
By Candra Wurtz
I had Lived an ordinary life with nothing at all interesting happening. Every day felt like the same ordinary old day. I was in a rut, stuck in a constant loop, nothing interesting ever happened to me, until that one Thursday. I remember it like it was yesterday, it was an ordinary sunny fall day, the leaves were the reds and yellows, the sun was warm on my back and it was the perfect day.
I was just relaxing in a tree reading a book when a nut bonked me on the head, then another and another. I looked op in the tree and saw a pack of squirrels throwing nuts intentionally at my head. Swiftly as I could climbed down the tree, but with one careless error I tumbled down three feet or so while still being pelted by nuts.
Once I got up I took off running away from the squirrels. Sadly the squirrels were faster and relentless. As I was running I was not paying attention to where I was going and I went straight in to a large oak tree. WHAM!!! Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud was all I heard as I faded out of conciseness. I was startled as I woke being carried away by a pack of wild turkeys.
Once they carried me to safety away from the squirrels I asked them if they could show me to the path and if the did I would never eat turkey ever again. I think they understood because they formed a circle around me and lead me to the path and thanked them again. Once they left I ran all the way through the woods to my house. I could not wait to tell them all about my day in the woods. The only problem was they did not believe me and they laughed at me. They said that I probably hit my head harder than I thought and that it was most likely my imagination. They said that all of it never really happened, but I will always know the truth about that day in the woods.

It was going to be a short ride only about 4 hours altogether through the South Dakota mountains. About an hour into our ride, we reached the mountains and as soon as we did Brody, Eli, Maddy, and I rode our horses to the top of the mountains. When we reached the top of the mountains we got off our horses and looked out over the South Dakota scenery, it was a beautiful view. I have never seen a better view in my life. You could see so far since we were up so high in the air and when we looked down at Tommy and Cassie they looked like ants. After we took a few pictures we headed back down to Tommy and Cassie. We went a little further after we got down from the mountain and then we turned back and headed towards camp. We arrived back at camp we washed, fed, and watered the horses. When we were done with that stuff we made a fire and started carving on sticks for a competition we were having and then at about 11 we went to…

The trail continued around the east side of the lake entering a gathering of trees forming an insignificant forest along the lake’s shoreline. From our viewpoint, the trees concealing the trail eventually dispersed on the southeast side of the lake, and the trail blended into the landscape. Using our imagination, we envisioned the route against the rugged terrain sloping into the lake. No point in taking a vote now, we had trekked to the lake and the consensus was to proceed with a lap around the lake.…

One of the supervisors, Jon Partridge, assigns the trio to search in a particular trail, where Bobby is least likely to be found. There, they encounter a man jogging with his dogs, a man in his early thirties carrying a big duffel bag, a homeless guy with black dreads, and a white-haired man who claims that the birder’s notebook Alexis found is his. Into The Woods

Before Grimm, before Supernatural, and even before Wicked, there was one “reimagining of classic fairy tales with interwoven plots and grey scale characters” and that was Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim uses four familiar stories to set the scene for his overarching plot allowing him to concentrate on jokes and creating new relationships between old characters. He also uses familiar characters in ways that blend categories. Through much of act one every character is stock through and through, yet by the end of the play our dashing prince charming has become an unapologetic adulterer, and the wicked old witch becomes an anti-hero. In addition to plot and character Sondheim pays special attention to his musical numbers; just from the first number we understand the characters relationships to one another, their motivations (having children, going to the festival, visiting grandma, and not starving), and we’re introduced to the play’s key metaphor: the woods. While these aspects were vital to the performances success I will be concentrating on the diction and acting.…
