The Dark Side Of Chocolate

When I heard the name of the documentary I must say I expected something different to what it really was. The things that I saw presented in this documentary never even crossed my mind before. When purchasing chocolate products, who really stops to wonder about the background of the product. I will never look at chocolate the same again. What truly shocked me was the names of the companies that were ignoring what was going on. I could not believe that they would know that children were being abducted, transported and sold into slavery and not care. When I look at documentaries like this I truly have to wonder what is going on with humanity, is it that making money is now more important than our fellow humans? How could people support this, how could you turn a blind eye. I think looking at this documentary made me lose some faith in humanity. I would never understand how people could treat another human being as if they are nothing, as if they are less than human. This documentary raised many questions in my mind. I wonder if these children were white children being transported from America, these big chocolate companies will show so little concern? How is it that these companies are knowingly supporting child slavery and child abduction and they are not being punished? Is it because these are poor, black children from Africa that the problem is being ignored? Looking at this documentary made me look at chocolate differently. Every time I eat chocolate now I would wonder if an abducted child made it possible for me to be enjoying it.

One main interesting fact I found to be is the misleading nutrition facts of corn and how corn syrup is not recognized as corn syrup but as fructose syrup etc. etc. etc. Along with that corn syrup is one of the nation’s leading diagnoses of diabetes and obesity. I feel we would be able to somehow broadcast the truth about how the food Americans eat today not only shorten your life-span but also cause disease, complications, and eventually add more bills to the list. Mentioned in the documentary, farmers used ammonia with the rapid growth of corn fields, which I found interesting. When it came out to finding out how much the government would contribute to the cultivation of each acre in astonishment it was a contribution of $28.00 per acre! Another interesting point, out of half of the crop will be turned into meat that we see in most grocery stores and 490lbs of corn will become sweeteners. Also I believe that Melvin W. Elvis was the first owner of a tractor. Present day the town of Greene, Iowa cultivated 2 trillion corn plants, the largest corn crop in American…

My heart felt so heavy when watching this 40 minute film. I could not help but feel a rush of emotions and for what those children and their parents went through. “The U.S. State Department estimates between 700,000 and four million persons are trafficked annually across international borders” (Goodman, 2010). Men are trafficked mostly for agriculture and labor, but Women and children make up the largest amount of people trafficked across theses borders. Women and children are trafficked for prostitution and sweat shop labor. Living in America, “Land of the free” I can’t imagine being forced to work in the awful, unthought of conditions for free or even perform sexual duties by force daily. So I definitely cannot bring myself to believe that small children are subjected to theses sorts of unacceptable situations. It is truly sad, and heartbreaking. Not only are the people doing this to others damaging them mentally but they could be exposing these women and children to diseases that could kill them, such as…

An extremely controversial subject that most people do not desire to be exposed to is human trafficking. The lack of mention that human trafficking gets in the media is often ignored as people continue to pretend that it doesn’t exist. Stories of people disappearing and getting abducted are in an abundance, yet when the survivors of human trafficking report their story, nobody is willing to listen. In the void of news media reports, non-profit government organisations have released videos and articles, bringing light to the subject of human trafficking. One of the more well-known organisations include Love146 and Equality Now. News Channel, CNN has released articles pertaining to human trafficking.…

I felt the A21 organization had a good concept at hand but poorly executed the entirety of the situation. A21’s mission is the raise general consciousness of human trafficking and help its victims but it lacks a crucial key to this: successful awareness campaigns. After doing some research, it seems that the organization did a poor job in allowing the walk to have an online presence. Few media outlets reported on the walk, and even if they did most had little evidence or facts to carry their articles. The only article I could find by a reputable news source is listed below, and contains only 11 sentences. This astounding lack of representation within the news displays how walks like A21’s does little to benefit the cause they are trying to support. Consequently, one of A21’s many challenges is the ability to raise retention of human trafficking within the world's…

In Chocolat, I learned that food has magical power that engages and connects people and brings them into good relations. Vianne and her daughter were not welcomed in a conservative and religious town at beginning, however her chocolate had magical power to melt those peoples’ cold attitude and they became drawn into her chocolate, even that stubborn pastor Reynaud who had strong hostile feeling against Vianne did so at the end. I liked the part that Reynaud couldn’t resist to break in her store and try all the chocolates before Easter Sunday. “It is like one of my dreams. I roll in chocolates. I imagine myself in a field of chocolates, on a beach of chocolates, basking-rooting-gorging. I have no time to read the labels; I cram chocolates…

At first, I was shocked that this director of the orphanage was selling his children, but then, I realized that he had to. He needs the money for food and water for the children, and he and all the children could be severely punished if he disobeyed a Talib. I wish there was a better way for these children. Maybe they should be moved to a safer place with less poverty. I still cannot believe that the Taliban are so heartless that they take away orphans. (82 words)…

There needs to be an increase of laws that protect all of us from these corporations who are just trying to make a buck. The food that is being put into our bodies now can affect everyone’s health in the long run. Consumers don’t realize all these chemicals and abuse to animals, workers behind the industrial food system. Consumers need to begin to shop carefully for their everyday needs to protect their health from diabetes and E. coli. These corporations are so powerful they can sue a consumer for talking bad about their products; for example, when Oprah talks about the beef industry. Consumers always have the power though. In the documentary, the supermarkets keep track of what consumers buy. Walmart would try and buy organic foods for their customers since that is what the people wanted. Consumers have a choice in the products they buy. If consumers begin to buy more organic, locally grown products there might be a shift of different products seen in our local supermarkets. Also, many people need to stop eating fast food just because its quick and cheap. These fast foods are the ones with the highest calories are the most artificial and dangerous for…

The blood curdling scream echoed through the hall of the house where the teenage girl was ripped out from underneath the bed. She was hiding from the darkly dressed men who had just taken her best friend. Fortunately, she had called her dad while hiding and he eventually found her weeks later, right before she was to be auctioned off into slavery. This scene from the movie, Taken resonates with me and comes to mind when human trafficking is discussed. However, almost none of actual human and child trafficking cases result in the family finding and rescuing the victim. According to Transparency International, there are more than 12 million victims of human trafficking in the world each year, more than half of which are women and children. Child…
