The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Christopher’s idiosyncrasies in the text are- not eating food after it has touched other food, ‘if his senses become overloaded or his brain is confused’ he will curl up in a ball and groan and perhaps for hours at a time, he prefers red, hates brown and yellow, he uses consecutive colours of cars to determine if it were to be a good day or a bad day.
When I discussed my idiosyncrasies with my mum she stated- Every live stock truck that drives past I have an overwhelming habit to wave at the animals within in the confinement of the truck (due to my mother once being an office worker at an abattoir), the volume on whatever ever device that has volume always has to be a multiple of 8 but other than those two, I cannot think of anything else.
Personally I cannot relate to Christopher’s peculiarities, I can only think of one person and that was Darcy Clay from my primary school who had Aspergus, but I didn’t know him well enough to tell you his idiosyncrasies besides he was very shy.

“He’s only a young boy though?”
“Yeah and in a couple of years he could be a serial killer,”
Said Constable Kerr,
“If we don’t start locking up the bad, we will be dubbed as ‘pussys’, Caroline if you want to be the nice cop you can do paperwork.
“Okay, sorry for doubting you Kerr.”
Replying quickly, just to avoid any further confrontation.
“Now, go and take the kid’s laces and whatever else he has in his pockets.”
“Sir, he has a name it’s Christopher and I don’t believe he is all there, like, he’s special.”
“I know he ain’t right in the head that’s why I’m telling you to take his stuff.”
Kerr said very narcissistically
I looked at my feet for a second and before I could turn around Kerr said
“Oh for fuck sake, I’ll get Hugh to do it, he’s already at the desk.”
Before I replied he had already walked away.

Christopher started screaming so I ran to the front desk and asked Hugh what he had done; he did nothing just asked

Christopher changes when he decides to solve Wellington's murder since he must socialize with neighbors and strangers, something way out of his comfort zone. Because of his mental disability, he's not very good at having conversations and doesn't feel comfortable around people and has trouble understanding social cues. He also hates it when people touch or grab him, which leads to him getting arrested for hitting a police officer: "I didn't like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him." His arrest happened when the police showed up to his neighbor Mrs. Shears's lawn, the scene of the crime.…

Some cannot wait to become adults, while others wish nothing more than for time to slow down. Wanting to grow up and being forced to out of necessity have many different effects on a young mind. Christopher wants nothing more than to receive his A level math and be like any other boy his age. He has never seen himself any more challenged than other children, often thinking of himself as superior to them. Unlike the others, Christopher feels he thrives in solitude and loves to be on his own. “When I was asleep I had one of my favorite dreams... and in that dream nearly everyone on the earth is dead” (Haddon 198-199). Christopher has no realistic knowledge of how to fend or care for himself, but as far as he knows,…

He struggles in social scenarios and cannot read emotions, but flourishes in theoretical areas (such as mathematics). His social isolation is emphasised in his first person narration. “They are lies about things which didn’t happen and they make me feel shaky and scared.” He cannot cope with ‘normal’ social situations and is dislocated from society. This alienation drastically impacts the decisions he makes throughout the novel, and impacts his relationships. “…and it was dark in there and there was no one in there with me …and I did some quadratic equations like 0=437x + 103x + 11.” Christopher’s use of equations allow him to forget about his social struggles, and allow him to detach himself from reality. He functions in his own unique and logical world. This social solitude and Christopher’s unique condition greatly impacts the personal choices made throughout the novel, and the ramifications of these on…

    Christopher Boone's Life

Christopher believes that “4 red cars in a row made it a Good Day, and 5 red cars in a row made it a Super Good Day, and 4 yellow cars in a row made it a Black Day” (47). He also uses the car rule to decide his schedule for his day--whether he would go and talk to people to do an investigation or whether or not he would eat his lunch, which seems to have no logic for most other people. “The next day I saw 4 yellow cars in a row on the way to school, which made it a Black Day, so I didn’t eat anything at lunch and I sat in the corner of the room all day and read my A-level maths course book” (53). He decided his entire life by the meaningless rules he made by himself, which is based on the colors he likes -- red -- and the color he hates -- yellow or brown. The idea seems very naive and childish but Christopher treated them as codes for life and followed them, which demonstrates the very mechanical nature of his…

When we think about heroes, Superman, Batman and other stereotypical heroes usually come to mind, but perhaps it’s the people that the public eye might consider “flawed” that bring this concept of bravery and courage into perspective. In Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Christopher is a most unexpected example of a hero. Although he may seem like an ordinary, 15-year-old boy, somewhat limited by autism, Christopher, in his own unique way, brings a new meaning to the word “hero”. Christopher shows the characteristics of a hero through his determination, and his ability to overcome his dependence on routines and certainties. This ability to conquer over his “disability” puts him above the common stereotypical hero.…

A scream emerges. Everyone looks around, surprised to see a young adult, crying and rolling on the ground. Someone tries to help him. He hits the person and screams again. This is Christopher John Francis Boone, the main character of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. This novel doesn’t have one specific theme because it is written with the perspective of Christopher, an autistic young adult who doesn’t get typical things the way I, and most people do.…

In chapter 163, Christopher’s ex-teacher, Julie, made an experience with a Smarties tube. She wanted to show him that people could think differently than him. She asked Christopher what he thought was inside the tube and he answered that there were Smarties. Then, she showed him that actually there was a red pencil inside it. Afterwards she asked him what his mother would say was in the Smarties tube if she was asked and he answered “a red pencil.” Because of his syndrome, he could not imagine that people would always say that there were Smarties in the tube because Julie showed him the red pencil and it became his new…
