To: Mr. John Hernandez, Re: Strategic Analysis of the Cuban Cigar Industry With the potential for significant political reform and absolution of the U.S trade embargo, it is critical to determine the probability and effects of these changes on the Cuban cigar industry. After reviewing these scenarios and two possible entrance strategies; creation of a joint venture and investment in an existing firm; it was determined that entering the Cuban cigar industry is not favorable at this time. After analyzing industry forces it is clear that entrance into Cuba is unlikely (see Appendix A). The industry exhibits high barriers to entry due to government restrictions. Foreign land ownership is not permitted, which makes entrance into the industry as a supplier impossible. Moreover, even if ownership laws are relaxed, government control over production is driving low supplier power, making it an unenviable position within the value chain. The other sections of the value chain, export distribution

There are many positives that can come out of the system of exporting with Cuba. The rice farmers really made good money when they were able to export rice to Cuba. Cuba gets their rice from Asia but farmers believe the Cubans would switch to American suppliers to save shipping time and freight costs. The farmers could send 600,000 metric tons of rice to Cuba every year. I think Cuba wants the American rice and the American farmers want to sell it to them which I think is a good idea. The…

Commercialism played the most important role in starting the Spanish American War. The US needed Cuba and the Philippines because they were essential to trade and business. American business had an investment of about $50 million in Cuba and an annual trade stake of about $100 million. Senator Lodge said that whoever has control of Cuba will be able to control the entire Gulf of Mexico, which was important because Cuba was in the direct line of the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal was a key feature to the US Navy, so a base was needed in the Caribbean in order to protect it. A free and independent Cuba would help the US because it could put a naval base there. The overseas market was also important to trade and business with other countries. By getting control of the Philippines, the US would form commercial relations with countries in Asia. Raw materials that originated from Cuba and the Philippines were also important. Raw materials included sugar from Cuba and pineapples, rubber, paper products and wood products from the Philippines. Control of these raw materials was very important to trade in the US.…

Secondly, the American businessmen invested a lot of money in the sugarcane, tobacco and railway industry. Thirdly, the Cuban businessmen exported sugar and tobacco to the United States. Before 1895, Cuba was governed by Spain. However many Cubans wanted to gain independence from Spain for the following reason, the Spanish imposed high taxes on the Cuban people. The Cuban did not like how Spain governed their country. Spain was the least important of Cuba’s export customer since Spain did little trading with Cuba. By 1895, the United States was Cuba’s most important trade…

__For five decades, trade, visitation, and feeding Cuba’s economy has been banned. Though they are a communist island, America and other countries that took advantage of the embargo left Cuba out to fend for themselves. Many people left their families and haven’t seen any blood relatives in years. Barack Obama and his administration are finally starting to lift restrictions and the need for certain licenses to help Cuba build back up their economy. Many predict that American visitation will triple within this year from many Cuban natives that have not been able to leave the U.S. before now. Congress is still considering the safety of America and its citizens while lifting this embargo. U.S. companies will be able to export mobile phones, televisions, and other software to…

    Ioi Group

The case discusses the story of the IOI Group, one of the largest palm oil players in Malaysia, which has seen rapid growth in the past two decades. Family-controlled since 1982, the IOI Group's main businesses initially were property and palm plantations. As a relative latecomer in the palm oil industry, it grew both organically and through acquisitions, and, in 2010, had sales of about US$4.3 billion and employed 30,000 people. Over the years, the IOI Group moved away from producing crude palm oil (CPO), a key commodity, and pursued a strategy of vertical integration by moving into downstream activities such as food ingredients manufacturing and oleochemicals. This transformed IOI from a Malaysian plantation company to a global ingredients manufacturer, making IOI a good example of a so-called "emerging market multinational." The case takes the point of view of the second generation family leader who is currently in charge of the downstream businesses, and discusses three challenges he faces in IOI's transformation process: 1) the issue of optimizing and integrating the global value chain; 2) the most suitable way to coordinate a multinational company with substantial global sales and operations; and 3) adaptation to changing needs of global customers. All this is supported by extensive information on the changing dynamics in the palm oil industry, where emerging market players are moving up the value chain, snapping up manufacturing assets from global fast-moving consumer goods companies, such as Unilever, while the latter increasingly focus on branded goods and seek to exit the lower margin and capital intensive manufacturing of ingredients. Students are asked to analyze the changing industry dynamics and provide recommendations given the goal to make IOI a leading palm oil…
