The Crucible: Heroes And Villains
“I think all of us have a hero and a villain in us,” Anson Mount said. This statement is true regarding the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. That villain we all hate, the bad actions they continue to do that makes us dislike them. Nevertheless, not all villains stay villains, they have that one moment that they turn things around. They are not seen as a villain anymore, they are seen as a hero. That is what happens with the audiences' perception of John Proctor through the course of The Crucible. It is no easy-going experience for Proctor as he has to go through the consequences of committing adultery against his wife Elizabeth. Abigail wants John to herself, but John does not care for Abigail. “She thinks to dance with me on my wife's grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I listed, and there I a promise in such sweat” (Proctor 1146). Here he proves that he feels bad for what he did with Abigail. It also proves that Abigail is crazy and just wants to hurt Elizabeth to get to John. Abigail even went so far as to place a poppet in the Proctor's household to try to get Elizabeth convicted of being a witch. Throughout all of the trials put through the court, John tells the truth. He wants to protect Elizabeth and his children. This warms the hearts of the audience, as they come to know John as a loving husband, and a family man. In the end, Proctor confesses his sins, but the court wants to hang his name up on the church. “I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is enough! (Proctor 1166). Proctor then gets hanged for not letting the court hang his name. He wanted to leave a good name for his children, he did not want to admit to false accusations. Heroes do something that positively affects others, John did this by protecting his family.
