The Crucible
The Crucible A prime example of someone who has gained power through accusations and manipulation is Abigail Williams. She had the most power throughout the whole book and one person she had power over was Elizabeth Proctor. On page 80, Cheever states “… And he goes to save her, and, stuck two inches in the flesh of her belly, he drew a needle out. And demandin’ her of how she come to be so stabbed, she testify it were your wife’s familiar spirit pushed it in.” Cheever is explaining to Hale and Mr. Proctor that Elizabeth had something to do with Abigail being mysteriously stabbed during dinner. Since Hale and Cheever found the poppet Mary Warren had sewn and gave to Elizabeth, they saw this as hard evidence and Elizabeth was arrested and taken to court. This all started when Abigail saw Mary Warren sewing the doll for Mrs. Proctor and took this to her advantage. She came up with the idea to pretend the Elizabeth was causing harm to her through the poppet and this is how she was able to get Elizabeth arrested and on trial. Another way Abigail has power over Elizabeth is through her own husband.

On page 60, Elizabeth says “John, if it were not Abigail that you must go hurt, would you falter now? I think not.” This means that John wouldn’t hesitate to go up and testify against anyone else but when it comes to Abigail he isn’t as sure. Elizabeth knows this is true because Abigail and John Proctor had an affair; that’s the whole reason that Abigail wants Elizabeth dead. If Elizabeth is taken out of the picture Abigail thinks that she will be able to take her spot as John’s

wife. The reason John is so hesitant is because he doesn’t want the town of Salem to know of his affair with Abigail. In a Puritan society adultery is very frowned upon and it would shatter his reputation. His faltering could’ve caused Elizabeth to go to jail, and his faltering was caused by Abigail.

Even though being discovered was a concern it was lesser a problem to Proctor than the fact that innocent people, including his wife Elizabeth who was accused by Abigail, could be and are being accused of witchcraft. Despite John’s previous efforts, Abigail and her band of young women have the courts convinced, forcing John to tell the courts “I have known her” (to know meaning to have sexual relations with) in order to establish Abigail’s motives, seeing as the affair would establish Abigail as a liar in the sense that she lied about Elizabeth stabbing her (this was the way Abigail accused Elizabeth), discrediting Abigail once and for all (Miller 189). Discrediting Abigail would be a big deal since she was a great driving force to the mass hysteria. Had it not been for his love for the truth and strive for justice, these events would not have never been known. John had quite valid reasons to make these decisions, and seeing the background to these decisions and the hoped outcome, the reason was obvious, he could not see such injustice…

In the beginning of Act Two, we can see how Elizabeth and John Proctor’s relationship is functioning after the affair. While John has not been with Abigail again, despite being so tempted to do so, Elizabeth is still very skeptical regarding his loyalty for her. There is obvious tension between them by how one worded their conversations are. Elizabeth barely says more than one sentence to her husband in most of the dialogue, showing the distance between them. Mrs. Proctor clearly hasn’t fully gotten over the affair and still has difficulty trusting John in his word. For example, in the beginning the first thing Elizabeth asks to her husband when she see him is “What keeps you so late? It’s almost dark.” (pg. 47) indicating that she is curious…

Arthur Miller’s book The Crucible, expressed both sad and interesting tales of the times most considered outrageous. Not only were the witch hunts unpredictable and non-valid but anybody could be accused of practicing witchcraft- even the preachers and children. Unfortunately, this was the same situation that occurred with the Red Scare that occurred after World War II. No matter what age, race or religious view one had, everyone was considered a suspect. Even those who would never dare to think or act any different from the majority were put on the stand- which almost always ended tragically. Arthur Miller uses the History in his book to show how ignorance and faulty power holders can lead to even the most respectful and well known people to go down in flames.…
