The Craigslist Killer
In America there are numerous killers that have shocked the nation, but one killer in particular had the world completely dumbfounded. It was the ‘Craigslist Killer’ who would have many people asking questions and wondering why a soon to be graduate from medical school would commit such evil acts. With graduation right around the corner and wedding plans to make with his fiancé, he seemed to have the world at his feet. So who is the ‘Craigslist Killer’?
Philip Markoff, also known as the ‘Craigslist Killer’, was born February 12, 1986. He grew up in Sherrill, New York, outside of Syracuse. He was the son of a dentist and of an educator-turned casino worker. Markoff attended Vernon-Sherrill Central School, where he was on the bowling team, history club and youth court and also a part of the National Honor Society. After high school, Markoff enrolled at the University of Albany, also acknowledged as SUNY, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. At SUNY he met pre-med student Megan McAllister while volunteering at a nearby medical center emergency room (Source 1).
McAllister was a senior and Markoff was a sophomore when the two started dating in 2005 (Source 1). Three years later Markoff proposed to McAllister during a romantic carriage ride in Connecticut in May 2008 (Source 5). Their wedding service was to be at Long Island, New Jersey, on a beach with a wedding party of 19 containing two ring-bearers and three flower girls on August 14, 2009 (Source 4). Little did McAllister know that a few months before her dream wedding, her then fiancé would be nicknamed the ‘Craigslist Killer’ and be convicted of multiple assaults and murder. Craigslist is a centralized network of online communities, featuring free online classified advertisements with sections devoted to jobs, housing, and personals, for sale, services, community, gigs, résumés, and discussion forums. Months later, on November 30th, married, 52-year-old father, Gary Ridgway, is arrested as he leaves his truck-painting job. Thankfully, it is the end of the longest running serial killer investigation in U.S. history; the break in the case was connecting the DNA taken when Gary Ridgway was arrested for the relatively minor offence of ‘loitering for the purposes of soliciting prostitution’. And this wasn’t the first time Ridgway’s connection to prostitutes had come to the attention of the police. In 1980, a prostitute he’d picked up accused him of driving her to the woods and trying to strangle her. Charges were dropped when Ridgway explained it away by saying she’d started to bite him while performing oral sex, and he only choked her to make her stop. Then again, in 1982, he was stopped with a prostitute in his truck and questioned by…

Increasing more than ever, American society is fascinated with serial and mass murderers. Throughout the decades, people have celebrated killers who have reached the peak of success within their field by glorifying them in movies, documentaries, magazines, and even on trading cards. In 1991, a trading card company in California created its first mass and serial card collection, which included notorious murderers such as Jeffrey Dahmer who killed 17 men between 1978 and 1991. Dahmer was known to have sex with the corpses of his victims, kept body parts of others, and ate some of the parts as well. Eventually, Dahmer was sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms and was killed in prison in 1994. . Television programs have also increased people’s fascination with serial and mass murderers by creating documentaries and mini series about them. Many popular actresses and actors who play serial and mass killers in movies unfortunately infuse these murderers with humanity and attraction (Fox & Levin, 2005). In this unit we look at the differences between serial killing and mass killing and investigate some of the motives that are behind the predominantly white middle class males who commit some of the most gruesome and legendary volume killing of other humans.…

    Joel the Ripper Rifkin

Joel David Rifkin, also known as “Joel the Ripper”, who was born on January 20, 1959 is a serial killer convicted of the murder of nine women. Although it is believed he killed as many as 17 drug addicted prostitutes, between 1989 and 1993 in New York City and Long Island. He is suspected by some to be responsible for some of the Long Island prostitutes whose remains were found in March and April 2011. In an April 2011 prison interview with Newsday, Rifkin denied having anything to do with the recently discovered remains. Rifkin often hired prostitutes in Brooklyn and Manhattan; he lived in East Meadow, a suburban town on Long Island. While viewing all the videos, reading books, viewing documentaries and newspaper articles on this man it is truly hard to pinpoint the exact type of killer he truly is; considering the many traits of a few different serial killer types he could fit. This person, I won’t even classify as a man could fit a few serial killer types; such as mission, but has so many characteristics of a hedonistic sexual sadist as well as power/control traits. He for the most part would have sex with most of his victims and then kill them, which were all prostitutes that would go undetected as missing for quite a while and he very well knew this information. He would make them comfortable, have sex with them and for most of the cases beat and strangle them and later dismember them and distribute their body parts. Although, in some cases he incased them in a trunk and dumped them but typically keeping to his usual dumping sites; some cases he used concrete and threw them in the East River never to be found. I consider him a mission killer because he targeted prostitutes with a random selection but mainly did it when his mother and sister were out of town which to me sounds planned to a certain degree. He has stated in many…

On August 20 1990, the university town of Gainesville, Florida was ranked as being the thirteenth best place to live in the United States by Money magazine. By the end of the week, American papers had renamed the town "Grisly Gainesville" after the bodies of five young students had been discovered brutally murdered and mutilated as they slept in their dorms. One weekend by one man transformed the excitement of the beginning school yeah into terror as hundreds of students fled, not knowing if and when he would strike again. A week later the media reported that the police had their number one suspect in custody, which created countless issues and ordeals for Edward Humphrey and his family. His case was simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Emotionally disturbed with a long history of strange behavior and violent emotional outbursts, he had seemed to police and the many witnesses to his antics, to be a prime suspect. With no evidence to hold him, the authorities somehow succeeded in stretching the limits of the law and had him locked away while they built their case around him. Before they could, the real killer was found. Danny Harold Rolling had moved on after his murders in Gainesville and was eventually arrested for armed robbery in Ocala, Florida. It would be some time before he would be linked to the homicides, and it would be longer still before Edward Humphrey's name would be cleared. Danny Rolling's story is a perfect example of how a childhood and background information about a person make the probability of becoming a serial killer so high. It would be impossible to know how horrible Rolling's childhood was and not feel compassion for the child who has been abused, beaten and bullied by an over-bearing and disturbed father. It would be impossible not to feel anger toward his mother who time…
