The Corruption In Francis Underwood's House Of Cards
The thirst for power has driven people to value it most than anything else, even their life. Today, the most powerful places of society occurs in the government, which is most prone to corruption. In the Netflix original series House of Cards, the main character, Francis Underwood seeks the highest position in politics, the presidency, and stops at nothing to get there. Beau Willimon portrays how the influential and unremitting Underwood reduces the influence of others on himself and achieves his satiety for power over others. This demonstrates that people with power will often want more of it while protecting themselves from any sabotage. Underwood’s main tactic to get power over others is through lies and deceit. The way that he got rid of the politician that took his promised spot was by making the media falsely believe that the politician was islamophobic. Underwood unjustly used the public media to get rid of the people he wanted and put his own friend in the vacant spot instead. He justified this by explaining “For those of use climbing to the top of the food chain, there can be no mercy.” This exemplifies how antisocial and corrupt Underwood truly is. In a similar covert way, Underwood becomes the vice-president, causes turmoil in the government, and supports the congressman that want to impeach the president. He admits his own malicious nature by revealing how “Democracy is so overrated” by becoming the president without anyone voting for him.
