There is something about youth that has always encapsulated those grown out of it. The human race puts it on a pedestal after it has been spent, and it becomes a last wish, something to laugh about in past tense. They will laugh and say how teenagers often feel as though they are invincible, that we are wild and insane because we think we cannot be harmed. But it is so much more than just a feeling. In the seconds between laughs and the embers of a glittering bonfire and the bite of a bone-chilling wind, we are invincible. We still may bleed, but it will be golden. We still may break, but it will feel as if we have been born anew. We still may feel the pain of our lives crushing into us, but it will seem like it is ecstasy rushing against us.…

Throughout life we adapt and change depending on societal norms, our environment, and many other aspects that influence us. Adolescence is a critical time in our lives, where we are first introduced to the real world and prepare ourselves for the future. Whether it be a teen who joins a new group of friends to experiment what it’s like to be an outcast, a teen who runs away and gets out of his comfort zone to figure out how he will deal with growing up, or a hermaphrodite who learns to accept who he is and is not willing to change himself to be normal. We will always have to be adapt to the situations we are put in and accept who we become. In many works of literature, the adolescent change as they mature…

The values and characteristics of a healthy community have remained largely unchanged over the years; however, with the invention of online communities they have become significantly more impersonal. Accepting people for who they are and showing empathy towards others are indispensable values of a community. The values of a traditional community as outlined in Azar Nafisi’s essay “I believe in empathy” and Sarah Adams’s essay “Be cool to the pizza dude” are being threatened by modern day technology. Social networking websites such as MySpace clearly endanger the values of a traditional community. This is highlighted in The Onion’s report “MySpace Outage Leaves Millions Friendless,” as well as in “Someone to Watch Over me” written by Theodora Stites.…

    Cultural Immersion

I have always been interested in learning about cultures that have been historically marginalized by the greater society for one reason or another. The American Deaf is one such culture that I have found very interesting, and it is this particular culture that chose to research for my Cultural Immersion Project. From the outset of my initial research, I became intrigued by the overwhelming sense of pride that is found among Deaf people. The hearing population tends to want to pity the Deaf for their inability to hear, but being deaf, to them, is not a handicap. What I have determined is that it is not their inability to hear – their deafness – that bonds them. It is their struggle for equality, and their struggle to be “heard” that forms the pride in their culture. There was a time when people thought that the Deaf could not learn because they were unable to hear. Very few people actually took the time to try to communicate with them. They were even placed in asylums under the assumption that they were mentally disabled because they could not hear or speak.…

Last December 20-21, 2013 we conducted a community immersion in Barangay 8a Upper Madapo hills Davao City. At first, I was very iffy about attending immersion. I didn’t see the entire point of attending something that didn’t seem to mean much to me, But as the days wore on during my immersion, I came to realize how blessed I was in life, how blessed I was to have grown up in such a safe and warm environment. With a loving family, and enough money to support my daily needs and education. During my immersion, I got to meet children who were only a few years younger than me, but who have endured much more in life than I ever have. They didn’t have the same resources that I have had to live a good lifestyle.…
