This review has great relevance to my research. It provides a detailed background into the historical aspect of this novel, and what the ideas, themes and issues this book talks about are based off of. This review talks about articulating sexuality and opposing salvation, but also how this book was received by the public when it was first published. The author does a very good job of revealing the hidden aspects of the book, as well as its relevance to that time period, and the problems that were present with black, lesbian women, and the recognition they were failing to receive. It also gives further information on other authors of that generation, and how they were affected by this novel. The author mentions credible sources regarding people, organizations, and groups, such as Barbara Smith, who brought forward the lack of black lesbian representation in U.S. literary criticism, as well as groups such …show more content…
It provides not only a complete overview of the book and brief character list, but a very well done critical evaluation of the story itself. It is relevant to my research, because it gives a better understanding of the novel, as well as deeper analysis of its themes and meaning which will be of good use when looking into the overall message Alice Walker was trying to portray. A weakness this source has is its lack in historical background, regarding the time period and important topics, which will be important when assessing the relevance of this book to that era. Although in some parts it is lacking, the author does a very good job at analyzing and interpreting aspects of the story and explains them in great detail and clarity, making it easy for one to
