The Cobra Event: Chapter Seven
Chapter 7: After the Death It was quiet inside the small white house with a couple of animals outside. There are three small bedrooms, but only two are occupied. There was no other house in sight. Without Lennie it didn’t feel right to have rabbits at the house. Nothing has been the same since the death of Lennie. George has been either working outside or sleeping. George and Candy have not talked much. If they do talk it is only about work. George and Candy stayed at the ranch until they got enough money to buy the house. The days at the ranch after Lennie left were rough. Curley was either at a bar drinking away or with a different girl each day. The boss got a new worker to replace Lennie. The new worker had a very bad attitude and was extremely rude. Luckily shortly after the new worker came Candy and George earned enough money to buy the house.
“Candy!” George yelled. “Can we head over to Susy’s?”
Lately George and Candy have been going over to Susy’s to drink away their pain and just forget about Lennie for a little bit.
“Again George?” asked Candy. “We were just there two days ago, and then we didn’t leave until we got kicked out at two in the morning!”
“I just need to forget about Lennie for a little bit.” Said George. “He’s all that I can think about and I just feel so guilty.”
When George and Lennie arrived at the Susy’s it was fairly empty. Only one other person was in the quiet and dark bar. There were plenty of stools around the corner at the bar, but George decided to choose the two in the corner. George slumped gloomily in the chair with Candy sitting down casually next to him. They ordered drink after drink quickly forgetting all their sorrows.
“Susy!” George called for the bar owner. “Can I have another drink?” He slurred.
“George, I think that is enough for you tonight.” Susy told him. George got very angry. He slammed his fist on the counter, then threw his chair down, and walked angrily out of the bar. George lumbered down

The “Cobra Event” by Richard Preston was an extraordinary book about an eruption of an unknown disease in New York. The disease started like the common cold but after a period of time blood blistering would begin in the mouth, nasopharynx, and on the eyelids, a series of seizers would begin and during the seizers, the infected started a process of self cannibalization. After having found two bodies of victims of the unknown outbreak Lex Nathanson, the medical examiner of the state of New York, called down to Walter Mellis with The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, in need of a pathologist to help with the case and Mellis sent Alice Austen, M.D, a twenty-nine-year-old…

From the moment George and Lennie were introduced to Curley’s wife, we could feel the tension rise. From just fleeing the last place they worked because of a run in with Lennie touching a woman, it’s an acceptable accusation that Curley’s wife will be directed to the conflict of the story. Another moment that predicted the end of the story was when Carlson shot Candy’s dog. Carlson said that the dog was aged and useless, that he wreaked of everything that smelt crummy and there is no point in keeping him around. It is safe to say this was a direct comparison to how useless everyone saw Lennie and we could infer that something similar that happened to Candy’s dog would happen to Lennie later on in the novella. Steinbeck made us see the treatment of elderly and mentally ill…

Once Candy and George discovered Curley’s wife’s dead body, they already knew that Lennie must have been the person that killed Curley’s wife. Candy and George began to talk, there in the barn, about what they were going to do. George said, “Guess… we gotta tell the… guys. I guess we gotta get ‘im ‘an lock ‘im up. We can’t let ‘im get away. Why, the poor bastard’d starve,” (91). Candy responds that Curley would get Lennie lynched or killed so it’d be best if they’d let Lennie go. Finally George tells Candy to go and tell the guys so they don’t think that he has anything to do with the murder of Curley’s wife. George comes back from the bunkhouse and the guys were at the barn looking at Curley’s wife. Everyone’s instinct reaction was to think that Lennie did it. Carlson comes running in after them screaming that Lennie had stolen his gun. Then Curley proves Candy right when he said, “Don’t shoot ‘im? He’s got Carlson’s Lugger. ‘Course we’ll shoot ‘im,” (95). So the hunt for Lennie begins and the guys want George with them; but George stray’s away and gets to Lennie first. Then George tells Lennie that he’s not mad and he…
