The Clique
Five Paragraph Essay
By: Emily Smith

The character I’m going to describe is Massie Block from The Clique Series by Lisi Harrison. One of the traits you will learn about Massie is her being very wealthy. Another trait of hers is loving to shop. The last and probably the most obvious trait is her popularity. My opinion of Massie Block is that she has a lot of money and is very commonly known.

One of Massie’s traits is her being rich. One example of this would be the first time Clair walks into Massie’s house.

“Massie noticed that Mrs. Lyon’s diamond rings were turned around, which massie knew meant that they didn’t have a lot of money.”(The Clique pg.9)

Another time massie shows she is rich is when she shows Claire her exclusive private girls school, OCD. (Octavion Country Day School)

“Even Claire couldn’t help but be impressed” (The Clique pg.50)

Also she shows this trait when she gets kicked out of her ultra expensive Westchester riding camp.

“You have one hour to gather your things. I hope your parents are happy.”
(Massie pg. 22)

As you can see, Massie is very rich, but she can also be very attracted to spending money.

Massie’s second trait is loving to shop. She first shows this the time massie tried to buy EVERYTHING online because her mom said she couldn’t leave the house to shop.

“She entered her Visa number and the screen said DENIED in big letters. Massie thought about crying, but was suddenly too poor to care.” (Massie pgs. 35 and 36)

She also shows this very important trait when the time her and her mom first went back to after she got her Visa back.

“…Kendra arranged a three hour visit with Massie’s old friend Visa so they could buy and outfit for the luncheon.”
(Massie pg.98)

Another time she showed this was when she wanted to buy super exclusive glasses that were very rare.

“This girl thinks that she’s walking out of here with a pair of D’s and G’s!”

The Ogilvie’s are rich, greedy, and selfish people. Mattie’s mother, Mrs. Cook wants Mattie to marry one of the Ogilvie boys. So when mother tries to hint at it, the Ogilvie girls realize it. In the text it says “‘Mama must you be so thick headed ? Mrs.Cook is asking if you might consider miss Cook as a wife for one of our brothers”’(53). One of the Ogilvie girls, Jeanine specifically points out that mother is planning on marrying Mattie to one of the Ogilvies. The Ogilvies believe that they are above the Cooks because of their money. There is an ironic part of the story though. Colette, the oldest Ogilvie girl had been faking being the wife of a respected figure, Roger Garthing and was actually married to her french tutor. In the novel it says “‘miss Colette came down with an awful case of the fever… The girl is burning up. The whole family gathers at her bedside, thinking she’s going to Jesus, when she sits straight up in bed and starts screaming for ‘Loueey!Loueey!’ Turns out this Louis is her husband”(186). This shows that although the rich seem better off, they have their flaws. It is ironic that the mean and selfish Ogilvies, who thought they were above everyone else, were then the laughingstock of the city. Mattie realizes that being humble and respectable pays off rather than being stuck - up and imperious. Mattie is starting to believe that what she is doing will lead to to good because…

Money is the root of all things evil. When a person put money before their beliefs and values a lot of things can go wrong. Delia and Missie May are the two women Hurston wanted you to see what money do to two different type if people, one self-made and one depended on money given. Delia was the woman that had to work hard for everything she wanted and have. She is not a person who let money define her, whereas you have, Missie May, a housewife and her husband gives her everything she wanted and needed. It’s Funny how Hurston depicted two different kind of bad marriages. In “The Gilded Six-Bits” the wife cheats on the husband where as in “sweat” the husband cheats on the wife. In both stories, Hurston tested a Woman’s strengths and weakness…

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, money is a prominent theme. The author shows that money is earned and spent in very specific ways. Each character’s relationship with money allows the reader to see their personalities more clearly. In the beginning of Chapter Two, Nick and Tom Buchanon have just met Tom’s girlfriend Myrtle. The three of them are on their way to Tom and Myrtles apartment when an elderly man selling puppies on the side of the street catches Myrtle’s eye. The author explains, “I want to get one those dogs, she said earnestly. I want to get one for the apartment. They’re nice to have- a dog-I think its cute…Is it a boy or a girl? She asked delicately.” “It’s a bitch,” said Tom decisively.” Here’s your money. Go and buy ten more dogs with it” (pages 27-28). Tom’s actions and choice of words when he is buying the puppy for his girlfriend Myrtle show the reader that he does not have respect for women. The way Tom throws his money around illustrates that he believes he, because he has money, is better than the person selling the puppies. Fitzgerald uses the money theme again when he writes about the parties that…
