The Children of the City
As we were looking for a street child in Divisoria last August 01, 2012, we found these 2 children, April and Dodong, getting busy licking on the leftover seashells given to them by a lady from a streetside Carenderia. We then approached them to have a conversation with us, and they got very excited. On our way to the cemented benches behind Park Café, they told us if we can give them food to eat for they are very hungry. If you would try to imagine them with just their names and nicknames, you’ll probably get confused. Bernardo Rivera, also known as April, is a 15 year-old gay, while Dodong’s real name is Rolando Tenquirida, a 13 year-old girl. We told her not to joke with us but both of them insisted that it’s her real name. Along our conversation, we knew that they are cousins. April and Dodong both stopped schooling at Grade 3 and grade 4 respectively as the typhoon Sendong broke out. They sometimes join classes held at Xavier University during Wednesdays and Saturdays, and they are so proud that they have ates and kuyas in Xavier. After the Sendong tragedy, Dodong was lucky enough to have her family completely but as of April, it turned his father to be missing until now. Before the typhoon hit the city, they were living beneath the Carmen Bridge, and now, both their families are relocated at Lumbia Relocation Site. We asked them why they stayed on the streets while they have homes to stay in, they just said that they don’t feel and they can’t adapt to the new environment that they have there. They visit there but only for some time since the fare to Lumbia they said is 40 pesos, and even to hang on the top of the jeepney owes a payment.
Whenever it rains, they said that to us, it may be a bad time but to them, it’s grace for they can already take their baths. Just like the other street children, they earn money through asking alms from passers-by and they buy it for food, and if there is change, they use it to surf the internet in

The post-apocalyptic novel, “Children of the Dust”, was published in 1985 by English author Louise Lawrence. The most recognisable themes in the novel are survival and adaptation: it is an undercurrent throughout the entire novel. The novel details the journey of life inside and outside of the bunker. It details the journey of the three generations of a family and their description a nuclear war. In every section a theme is explored: survival, the misuse of technology, reliving past mistakes and prejudice.…

For the Love of Cities In the book titled, "For the Love of the Cities, author Peter Kageyama conveys to his audience how love should be the center at every city. He strongly believes love is what can bring cities and the people who live in them closer together to create a lovable city. His approach to urban and economic development in a city is not the relative approach to what many city officials or managers may take. He doesn't understand why more people aren't talking about love and how to increase the love in communities?…

The city of New York, in the early 1900s (and even now), has been depicted in various ways through the views and experiences of its own inhabitants, tourists, passerbys, and even legends in literature; authors who have lived in and/or written about the diverse city. Some literary works have made reference to the city as a great place to be and even depicted it as “the most fatally fascinating thing in America.” (Johnson 387). While other authors have depicted New York City in a completely different light, referring to it as a place being taken over by tourists/white people or saying that it’s a dangerous place to be. Some written works that have glorified New York City are “The Autobiography of an Ex-colored Man” by James Weldon Johnson and “Paul’s Case” by Willa Cather. Some literary works that have de-glorified the city are “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin and “When the Negro was in Vogue” by Langston…

Holidays and birthday parties that are spent at Oma and Opa’s house are hectic. Trapped in a small white, worn down house filled with thirty people. All compacted and smothered together like a filled Gumball machine. Small children with mouthfuls of candies and spit running down their chin, weaving through the legs of adults trying to tag one another. Inside the small house the lingering smell of fish oil and Indonesian food filled the noses of the hungry, as they talk, laugh, and smile with one another. In the vandepol family all major…

I have been living in the City of Springfield since the mid 1980’s. It is not a secret that we have been experiencing an increase in youth related violence. The Springfield Police even has a gang task force. What we do not have is enough people willing to give young people a “second” chance. However, we do not give them a first chance to begin with. We do not support any positive youth development programs that allow participants the time and space to plan activities of interest, problem solve, and develop leadership skills. Anything that is youth driven makes adults uncomfortable and highly suspicious. We lack strong young leaders because we want nothing to do with giving them a chance to develop those skills in a safe encouraging environment.…

1775, a year of both unrest and unparalleled unity. Prosperity and poverty. One could describe it as both amazing, and albeit insufferable. And according to the world-renowned author Charles Dickens, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” (Dickens 1). Centered around the neighboring nations of England and France, Dickens acclaimed novel A Tale Of Two Cities opens with this famous line, presenting an indisputable truth. That, throughout history, whether in pre-Victorian England, or the modern United States, the times equally and eternally remains both the best and worst. In reference to the former of the two, the United States today remains the epoch of the best of times through economic explosiveness, strong border and immigration…

The main struggle they all face is their financial situation. Besides the leaky roof, they rarely have money for food. Yunior speaks of almost always eating boiled yucca, platano and guineo. They didn’t get meat or beans and only occasionally would they get cheese or bacalao (codfish). Only on the best days can Mami afford oil to fry the food. They only way they could get their medicine on sick days was to skimp on the little bit of dinner they had. Obviously, they couldn’t afford clothes for school and Mami had to make sandals for Yunior and Rafa by sewing paper together. The leaky house was in a neighborhood that was “not the safest of places”, the kind of neighborhood where you can have a rat infestation with dozens of them running around. Sometimes when things are really bad, Mami has to send the kids away to relatives. Only the people living in campos or the Haitian immigrants were poorer.…
