A slight breeze blew throughout the dandy forest, swaying the stiff lifeless trees and blowing the black stained leaves across my bare white feet. As I stumbled across the dead landscape, a slight fog swam around blending in with the increasingly falling snow. Hundreds of dark wood surrounding me seemed to slowly cave in, creating a narrow cave-like passage. An eerie feeling swept over me, and I stopped completely, analysing every detail around me. The smog became thicker, blinding the scenery and almost completely covering my vision. I sensed an inhuman presence watching me, and flinched whenever a snapping sound came from a faraway distance. I slowly turned around and began pacing in the direction I came from. The fog smothered me but I kept running,…
Clement Greenberg (1909-1994) was possibly the most prominent and influential art critic of the twenty-first century. Greenberg’s intensely influential focus was on the notion of “formal purity” and how that affected the work itself in a painting just being a painting and “orientating itself to flatness” as modernist paintings had. Additionally, Clement Greenberg found interest in Abstract Expressionism and how Greenberg’s strictly outlined theories on art would inspire artists of the Minimalist and Pop Art movements to respond in kind with their own art as a rebuttal.…
Television is the predominant media-metaphor of this generation. Television shapes the way people think, act, and communicate; however, this powerful apparatus does not always disclose the whole truth. In fact, television often hides the whole truth from the public, but, ironically, most people love the media and blindly believe what the media says. As Alford Huxley says, people will “adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.” Unfortunately, Huxley’s hypothesis is slowly becoming a reality. In Neil Postman’s “Amusing Ourselves To Death,” Postman argues that the many facets of television people love will actually ruin them. Of these many facets of television, three are predominant. Television is ruining people’s lifestyles…

Early in the fall, several families left York Factory to find food and shelter further inland to the south. Only a handful of trappers and their families chose to remain behind. Food was scarce and the weather uncooperative. All had predicted the weather would change; then, they would bring in plenty of furs to the traders at the fort. This was not to be. Day after day, the winter winds never seemed to stop. Tough times were ahead for the people along the Hudson Bay coast, and this brought fear and anxiety to every dwelling, including that of the Gores, whose friends and relatives already moved elsewhere.…
John Green once said “Just remember that sometimes the way you think about a person isn’t the way they actually are.”They seem to be a different person on the outer side but they are completely different from within. The theme of Outsiders is that Don’t judge the book by it’s cover.…
“Some people strengthen the society just by being the kind of people they are,” acclaimed by John W. Gardner. In Fahrenheit 451, a novel by Ray Bradbury, society has become obsessed with technology enough that everyone but a selected few has lost the meaning in life. With that stated, many strive for adrenaline that can, and will be if it comes down to it, only be achieved through suicidal actions. This is much like today’s society, where adults and minorities are driving their attention to technology rather than socializing with a few friends at a park.…
The significance of literature serves as a gateway to learn about the past and expand knowledge and understanding of the world. Literature holds the power to expand minds by raising questions such as: “what are the goals of this work? Why is it relevant today? What is its purpose?” The answer to these questions and others similar to them exist in a gray world where answers are just as unique as a fingerprint. But some minds might not open to thoroughly experience the wide world that is beyond them. Generally defined, the term social misfit refers to someone who does not in--an outcast. Social misfit is applied in regards to people who either do not fit in but try to do so; or, towards someone who does fit in with society on purpose. In A Confederacy…

Alienation and loneliness are two things not to get confused because of the circumstances that revolve around arriving to that state of being. Alienation refers to the feeling of being isolated from society, while loneliness refers to the state of being alone and completely void of human interaction. In Mary Shelley’s gothic novel Frankenstein, determined seafarer Robert Walton and headstrong protagonist Victor Frankenstein both face moments of complete solitude where they have reached their lowest point and there was no one there to offer them comfort, and they have both faced alienation, whether intentionally or unintentionally. However, the difference between those two characters is how they take action and combat their solitude. The way…
“Mom! Can you draw for me”, a common phrase that echoed from our small Brooklyn apartment, see when I saw my mom, I saw a hero, my protector, and one of my biggest influences. She would always entertain and illustrate my wildest imaginations, from Dinosaurs to dragons to James Bond, the mind of that Pre-Schooler seemed to never rest. But one day my mom did something new, she gave me the paper and pencil, and I would sketch, sketch and sketch until the days came to end. And by the time kindergarten came around I was already enthused with art, oozing a new love of painting, a love that still reigns supreme today. I find painting to be my favorite medium. Something I truly wish to master. From the time I was a young child to where I am now I see…
Cosmicism is a literary and philosophical term that was created and used by author, H.P. Lovecraft in many of his weird and odd fiction novels. The philosophy of cosmicism defines that there is no recognizable presence in our world, such as a God or other spirit leaders, and humans are completely insignificant in the larger scheme of life. Lovecraft as a writer, focused of philosophically intense horror and gothic tales that continue to involve strange phenomena, such as astral possession and alien abduction; these re-occurring themes of his fiction contributed to the development of this unique philosophy overtime. One of Lovecraft’s more famous tales, “The Colour out of Space” expresses a world wind of cosmicism themes. In this tale, Lovecraft presents his audience with a large amount of weirdness to a downed meteorite that at first meets the eye. This tale soon begins to become a tale of inexorable doom that is being visited on a local farmer and his family, with small hints of things that are becoming wrong. Lovecraft adheres to his definition of cosmicism in this text, because he speaks about unexplained lights and trees moving when they should not be, also about an unexplained gradual descent into insanity for an innocent farm family. H.P. only leaves his audience with the knowledge that we as humans are less than a thought to other life forms of the universe that watch over and pass our planet Earth.…
I am writing today to discuss the slow depletion of creativity from the coming generations of young Americans. In a report made by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman, a creativity test administered to millions of people showed a grave decline in their creativity scores as years progressed. The largest decline being in the demographic of children between kindergarten and sixth grade. Numbers don’t lie, and outlined in the publication there’s no doubt the ability to create for our nation’s youth has declined. Of course many things can contribute to such an obscure problem. However, I believe faults in our school system bear much of the blame for the students shortcomings. As a result, it is necessary for some preventative action to be in place to prevent an outbreak from becoming an epidemic.…
