The Catcher in the Rye – Timeline

Saturday
Holden Caulfield has just been expelled from Pency Prep and is supposed to leave on Wednesday. He goes to see Mr Spencer to say goodbye, but shows irritation when Mr Spencer tries to remind him of his poor academic performance. Holden goes back to his dormitory.
Back at his dormitory, Holden tries to read a book but is constantly interrupted by Ackley. He tries to deter him but Ackley doesn’t take the hint. Eventually, Stradlater arrives. Stradlater asks Holden to write him a descriptive English composition, which Holden agrees to. Stradlater reveals that his date is Jean Gallagher, an old friend of Holden’s. Holden shows surprise at this, and proceeds to talk about the things they used to do, such as play checkers. Stradlater isn’t interested in such small talk, and soon leaves. Holden has dinner then leaves with his friend Mal Brossard and Ackley to hang around in Agerstown, a nearby town.
They return to their dormitories, and Ackley parks himself in Holden’s bed, despite the hints for him to get off. Holden writes about his dead brother Allie’s baseball bat for Stradlater.
Stradlater returns, and isn’t pleased with the work about a baseball glove. Holden takes it and rips it into pieces. Holden then asks him if he had sex with Jane, and doesn’t get a straight response. Holden loses his temper and tries to fight Stradlater, resulting in a bleeding nose.
Holden cleans himself up and goes over to Ackley’s room. He says that he fought Stradlater to defend Ackley’s name. He harasses Ackley for a while then decides to leave early and spend a few days in a hotel. After packing up, he heads off.
He walks to the train station and catches the train. A woman sits next to him and reveals that he’s the mother of Ernest Morrow, another Pency Prep student. He makes up a lie about how her son is popular then talks for a while until she leaves.
Holden gets off at Penn Station and goes to the phone booth but can’t think of

He also finds himself in a situation with a call girl who is approximately the same age as him. He starts to view her as a person, rather than a sex object. He pays for the service yet he only wants to converse with her but she leaves in frustration. She brings her pimp to physically abuse Holden. As the days go by he searches for nothing except embracing his surroundings after hearing a young boy sing lyrics “if a body catch a body coming through the rye “ and he misinterprets it to be as a signal Holden believes that to be a "catcher in the rye" means to save children from losing their innocence. He begins to perceive the world and comes back home to his younger sister back in his hometown. He meets a girl when watching the play “Romeo and Juliet” where he meets a girl Sally and after hanging out together for a moderate amount of time he impulsively asks her to elope with him to a place far away forever. Holden Caulfield is one of the most hypocritical characters in literature. He spends the entire book complaining about all of the 'phonies’ around him when in truth he is one of the biggest phonies of all. Throughout the novel, there are many events where Holden exemplifies his hypocrisy. There are three primary examples. Holden first displays hypocrisy when he met Earnest Morrow’s mother on the train on his way to New York. Also, when he speaks about Stradlater’s sexual advances and his own. Finally, excellent examples of Holden’s hypocritical actions are the several times he goes to the bars while in New York.…

After being hit to the floor by Stradlater, "[Holden] didn't even bother to get up. [He] just lay there on the floor for a while, and kept calling [Stradlater] a moron sonuvabitch. [He] was so mad, [he] was practically bawling."(45) It is very common for teenagers to have an emotional reaction to anger. Holden continues to hide his emotions behind anger, but eventually will become overwhelmed and have mental breakdown at any point. Holden is supposed to mirror the idea of an average teenager. Like most teenagers, Holden is going through the stages of grief due to a big loss. One day "[Holden] started talking, sort of loud, to Allie. [He] do that sometimes when [he] get very depressed...."(98) Holden continues to deny the fact that Allie is dead and expresses that denial by talking so calmly and casually about…

from his dead brother, and unreasinable lies to cope. Holden may think the world is insane because of the injustice of losing his brother, but Holden deals with this by immersing himself in unreasonable fantasies. Holden thinks his fantasy world will be perfect in every imaginable way. The real world goes on in quite an ordinary, predictable way, and Holden is too caught up in his own fantasies to realize his mind is just not right. With Sally Hayes, he imagines the two of them going up to a cabin in New England, getting married, and becoming self-sufficient. Sally thinks it’s irresponsible, rightly so, and dismisses Holden. Holden imagines things so out of the ordinary that they are downright bizarre; but to him they are reasonable and he acts upon them. He pretends he was shot by Maurice, and then…
