The Brooklyn Bridge was a feat of modern technology. Its construction spanned from 1869 to 1883, or fifteen years over the lives of its three creators. The first, who was also the designer, was John Augustus Roebling. Many thought it impossible for his plan to succeed, as most other suspension bridges had failed under certain circumstances, but he was determined to prove them wrong. In 1867 his plan was approved by New York legislators and just two years later construction began. Throughout the years of construction, many died, including Roebling himself. After his passing, Roebling’s son, Washington A. Roebling, took his place as chief engineer. For most of the time afterwards, he worked well in this place, but after getting what was called…

Western Boulevard is a major roadway that bisects NC State’s Main and Centennial Campus as well as serves as a main gateway into the center of downtown Raleigh. Pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular volumes are steadily rising each year and are expected to continue this trend as the university and city, are constantly developing and growing. The investigated section of Western Blvd has on average 30,000 vehicles per day and hundreds of students crossing at various locations throughout the corridor. The main area of concern is the intersection of Avent Ferry road and Western Blvd (shown in figure 1), which produces many safety concerns for students. The large amount of pedestrian traffic is a product of students walking to class from…

The purpose of this experiment is to study several bridges and build a bridge similar to the one that gave the students the uppermost muse. The students had to research facts about Truss Bridges, including its beginnings during the late 1700’s. Early Truss Bridge builders were first to spread its name throughout the United States, but the name of Truss Bridges soon cultivated across the world. There were numerous reasons as to why the design of Truss Bridges grew so broad. Firstly, the Revolutionary War destroyed the limited transportation the United States had left. The innovative and enhanced United States needed a more advanced form of transportation. For the reason that iron was not freely available, the idea of using…
There are many important items that have helped to shape the history of our people and society. Among the many things that have been synonymous with whom we are; the Piano has stood tall over time. This is the reason why a number of Piano Movers Sacramento and its environs have patronized over the years, decided to throw more light on the subject. They organized a symposium in which they highlighted the salient points about this topic. Although, there are many undertones about the way the presentation was done, the fact remains that the Piano holds a top place in our history. The following lines capture some of the high points of the event.…
Bridges are something that have always fascinated me. In my picture you can see I have the Julien Dubuque Bridge in the background. This bridge is a two lane bridge, it has been debated through the past years on if this bridge will be altered in the future. I think it would be a very interesting lesson for the students to look at adding lanes on the bridge. They could choose to expand the bridge into four lanes, build a second two-lane bridge, or tear down the current bridge and replace with a four-lane. During this project students would need to keep in mind that the Julien Dubuque Bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. They would also have to factor in construction time and possible road detours to decide what would…
September 11th, 2001 marked a tragic time of loss and grief in U.S. history. The terrorist attack that occurred in New York left many families and loved ones in shock and in despair. Two planes crashed into the side of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center causing a fire and evacuation of the workers inside. Many died by jumping to their deaths, falling debris, or rescuing those trapped in the buildings. A memorial and museum was created to honor the lives lost on 9/11. The design, location, purpose should be taken into consideration when building a monument.…
In 1970, Antonello is 22 years old and recently married. He has been working on the Westgate Bridge for almost 2 years and loves his job. Like many of his workmates, Antonello is proud of the bridge. He believes it is going to be more spectacular than the Sydney Harbour Bridge, that it is going to bring the city together and that they, the bridge builders, will be remembered for years to come. On the 15th October 1970 the Westgate Bridge collapses during construction and thirty-five men are killed.…

When you hear the word bridge, I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is connection. Yes, connection is such a vague word when we talk about a bridge but it blossoms in variety and definitions when we specify the Brooklyn Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge is the first bridge built in New york City 1883. The first of many construction work that would build the well known juggernaut of a city that we have here today. Many people view the Brooklyn Bridge as a symbol of new york city and for great reason,. The Brooklyn Bridge connected Brooklyn to Manhattan island and was the upstart of urban working and a spike in business in the city.…
