The Boy Who Dared is a book with theme and symbolism. The book is mostly about a boy who is in jail avoiding execution while telling his life stories. In his life he had to grow up in Germany while Germany is in war. But Helmuth, the boy, did not believe in the things Hitler is doing to Germany. Symbolism and theme are very important in this story. There are four main themes in this novel. The first theme is nationalism. Nationalism is when u have pride and fight for your country. Courage is also an important theme in the story because Helmuth sticks up for himself against Hitler. The third theme is responsibility of an individual. The last main theme is, don’t do things you know are not right. In the story world wide radios are banned and Helmuth knows it. He listens to the radio every night but one night he gets caught. The symbolism in the book stands out a lot. The cellar that Helmuth has to stay in symbolizes being trapped. In one of his stories he tells about planes that were bombing his town. He said it was scary and he felt fear. The planes bombed everywhere in his country. The planes symbolized that there is no safe place if your country is ruled by an evil dictator that wants war with everyone. But when Helmuth is with his friends he feels better and not in much harm. His friends symbolized peace and family. Nationalism and courage, just to name a few, are very important inside the novel. The symbolism in The Boy Who Dared is expressed deeply. The theme and symbolism play a very big part in this story.
