TITLE: The Best of Me
DIRECTOR: Michael Hoffman
GENRE: Film

“The Best of Me,” directed by Michael Hoffman is a thought provoking, bittersweet movie about Dawson who returns to his hometown for the first time in twenty years to carry out the last wishes of his treasured friend and surrogate father Tuck who passed away. Dawson is surprised to find that Tuck has arranged for Dawson’s high school girlfriend Amanda, to join him in fulfilling these last wishes. In fact, it soon becomes probable that Dawson and Amanda seeing each other again and possibly reviving their old romance is the main goal of Tuck’s last wish.

I think that the relationship between Dawson and Amanda despite their differences is envied by lots of teenage girls. We see this in the quote “That's why I loved being with you. We could do the simplest things, like toss starfish into the ocean and share a burger and talk and even then I knew that I was fortunate. Because you were the first guy who wasn't constantly trying to impress me. You accepted who you were, but more than that, you accepted me for me. And nothing else mattered-- not my family or your family or anyone else in the world. It was just us.” Dawson was born into a criminal family who was very violent towards him. He was definitely not like his family and despised the reputation they had as it impacted the way people looked at him. Dawson escaped his father’s home and began living in the garage of a local mechanic, Tuck. Tuck, who had recently lost his wife, lived alone and allowed Dawson to stay, which forged a relationship, that would last for the rest of his life. This relates to the wider world, as according to ‘Crisis Connection’ 3 million children witness violence in their home each year and also 75% of children who have been brought up in abusive homes or been abused themselves grow into a relationship with an older friend who becomes their surrogate parent. Amanda was a very bright girl with huge ambitions for

Before Amanda was taken, she was outgoing, personable, popular and full of life. She enjoyed things like most sixteen-year-old girls (fashion, music and boys). She also worked at a local burger joint and had dreams of going to college (Jordan & Sullivan, 2015). Now she finds herself frozen at the thought of being in a public setting like the burger place. She finds herself having panic attacks when she doesn’t hear people around but rejects them being there all the same. She doesn’t look at fashion the same or enjoy any of the things she used to.…

This conversational article written by Karen Holland is one that gives an opinion based piece that describes the relationships of a specific T.V. sitcom and how we can learn from that sitcom as well as others. The specific sitcom specified is titled Modern Family, I which the author particularly likes. Though Holland does not describe Modern Family relationships in detail, she generalizes the relationships of sitcoms as a whole. She does this by describing the characteristics of the relationships such as the fact that the couples accept each other’s flaws completely and all conflicts are resolved in thirty minutes or less. By the end of the piece Holland says we should rewrite out own relationship “scripts” to make our…

Nicole Martins states in her article that the 16 & Pregnant series portrays teen mothers as being well off financially and having supportive friends, families, and fathers of their children. To elaborate, viewers are believed to think the teenage girls with children have easy access to childcare, are able to finish schooling with ease, and have money to fulfill all their needs. It is understandable why the opposition argues that the show portrays the teen mothers as having a glamorous lifestyle when, as Susie Kroll addressed, their faces are all over magazine covers much like celebrities. Although the girls have taken on a celebrity amed status, 16 & Pregnant does not focus the show around their stardom. Though it is a valid point because the girls do live a celebrity-inspired lifestyle now, 16 & Pregnant still discourages teen pregnancy by focusing on the hardships a teen mother faces. The show brought this fame to the young mothers, but it does not make that a point to recognize in the show itself. The glamorization of teen pregnancy is not the only argument critics make when proclaiming that shows such as 16 & Pregnant promote teen pregnancy; many will also make the argument that the MTV network is not possibly capable of airing a television series that portrays actual…

As proven in the statement, “Thus, she took advantage of him in the same way that every young girl takes advantage of a father: She loved and admired him, she asked him for things that he sometimes have her, and she didn't pay him a lot of attention when she was around her friends., Lindsay, just like many other teenagers, do not recognize their wrongdoing when it comes to their parents, which is why it can cause a great amount of hurt if something were to happen to their parents (104). The caregiver is commonly looked over and a common misconception that they will always be there is created. In all reality, teenagers are oblivious to the severity of the way they treat their parents, but that is normal. As proven throughout the course of this assignment, adolescents are faced with many challenges when it comes to maintaining a certain status quo and it is all about them finding themselves. The quote, “To this day, being able to “take advantage” of someone is the measure in my mind of having a parent.”, shows how typical it is for teenagers in this generation to “take advantage” of their parents, but that is simply one of the struggles that come along with being a parent at this day and age (104). Being a teen and having to live in a world that expects nothing less than perfection can be quite troubling and may certainly result in frustration and animosity…

Juno is a 16 year old white female currently in high school. She is the oldest of two children in her family headed by her father and step-mother, who she does not see very often. This is problematic because the family is “one of the core relationships in their lives and dissolves the family structure they depend on for secure development” (Ashford & LeCroy, 2008, p. 403). At the beginning of the movie, she seems content with her station in life and in school. She looks to a boy named Paulie Bleeker to help her feel wanted. This interaction highlights the fact that Juno values her relationship with Paulie, and is concerned when she realizes she is pregnant with his child, because this may ruin their relationship. As an adolescent, Juno values…

Sandra and Steven both had a lot in common and that is what mattered most to them is that they both enjoyed doing the same activities. This was stated at the beginning of their relationship, however unfortunately they had one huge concern, they were both of a different race and knew their families would have a hard time excepting them together as a couple. Sandra being black and Steven being white, had caused them to hide their relationship for the first couple of months. Their even bigger fear was having children and the fear of them not being accepted as individuals or even a family as a whole. These fears were proven when classmates of theirs actually started to avoid them because they were an interracial couple and even Steven’s father told him this would limit his career. Eventually when they did marry, the families came around. Except Steven’s uncle who refused to let them into the house. When they finally married and had kids, Sandra was often questioned if she was the nanny just because she was black. Ending on a positive note, Sandra and Steven sent their children to a private school where they were accepted. Sandra states how different this generation is, and how skin…

A lot of teens today try not to be "basic", forgetting to be themselves. In my opinion, everyone is unique in some kind; the problem is with those who hide their uniqueness, trying to be someone else. Lindsey had that problem as well; she faked it so much that she is one big phony most of the time, which is pretty relatable. After wearing so many masks it can be hard to remember who you really are. One of the things that attracts her to Colin is that he's just himself, even if that self is an annoying know-it-all.…
