The Bean Trees Character Analysis
Change. It’s a scary word. At least that's what Taylor used to think. Because it meant new beginnings. New beginnings with a future unknown. But change is necessary. Necessary for her to learn, to grow, and to better herself. Being fearful of something is normal, but not common when someone is fearless. In The Bean Trees, Taylor is faced with many challenges that she has to overcome. These challenges will test her strength and ability to be true to herself.
The first challenge Taylor is faced with is Turtle. That one fateful night, when she found Turtle in the back of her car, Taylor has changed. She never wanted a kid, yet there is one in front of her. It was challenging because she didn't have experience with children. When Taylor got back on the road, in the book it says “ I held the steering wheel and dug my fingernails into my palms” (pg 25). At first she was fearful of the idea of having a kid. However, as the story goes on, i’ve noticed that Taylor becomes fearless.

Since she saw Newt Harbine’s dad explode from a tractor tire. When she goes to Tucson and meets Mattie at ‘Jesus Lord Tires’ she takes turtle with her and sets Turtle in a tire. It is ironic that she has a irrational fear of tires, yet she sets Turtle in one. This fear was irrational because she eventually faced her fear and was less afraid.
In conclusion, the change that Taylor made was necessary. It helped her face her fears. It also helped her experience new things. Things that helped her grow as a person. Taylor made new friends, friends that helped her through the hardest of times. All the challenges that she faced, in the end, it wasn't that difficult. She is not fearless of the future, yet she is not fearful. She is ready for the challenges that will face her. Taylor is a strong character, and will be able to overcome her
