The Beach
Just imagine a soothing, peaceful, majestic strip of sand and pebbles where land meets the sea and sea meets land. This amazingly gorgeous, serene piece of earth, commonly known as the beach, is my happy place. I stumbled upon this fortunate stroke of serendipity in my early childhood and it appalls me that at some point in history this astonishing creation didn’t exist. Since I’m rambling and your reading I guess I can tell you about my first visit to the beach. Although I was a child I can vividly remember this vacation, being that it was my first trip to my happy place. This life changing vacation started with a long, boring, and tiresome drive from Jackson, MS to Myrtle Beach, SC. From listening to the terrible music my dad played, the annoying screech of my mother’s complaining, and the irritating click click click of sister’s phone my head was about to explode. Finally we are here! As I got out of the car I couldn’t help but marvel at picturesque shore lined with blue velvet waves tranquilly flowing onto the sandy coastline. “Ouch” I quickly yelped, maybe I shouldn’t have gotten out the car on the blazing hot cracked pavement without shoes on. Besides this minor onset of pain I was already having the time of life. I joyfully sprinted from the car feeling the warm minute grains of sand between my toes as I met the coastline. The sea gulls roared above my head as sweet sweet smell of barbeque consumed the air. All of a sudden the semi-enticing smell of salt water and seaweed quickly filled my nose as I submerged myself in water. Roaring in my ear were the vibrations of the water from swimmers nearby and fish fleeing my general area. I tossed dunked swam and jumped until my limbs grew weary and it was time to depart from my happy place. I felt that for once in my life I was truly at peace with myself and I have found true happiness in my heart. Surprisingly this was only a day at the

Walking around the beach made me feel more comfortable than ever. As I stroll along, I could feel the soft smooth sand beneath my feet. The sand looked clean like sugar spread out for miles, as it squished between our toes and made my calves ache with every step. The sound of the ocean comforted me, the rhythmic pounding of the waves represses all my worries. I kicked the water and it responded with a swoosh of its waves. That brought back memories, when I used to come here with my friends and used to play around in the water. I couldn’t help but faint a smile. I found it some what amusing to see the sand castles that still remained, the ones we built long ago, the lucky few that made it through reckless little boys play. It was dark outside and stars floated in the distance, but the moon seemed so close, I could grab it and take it in my pocket to keep for myself, so close that I could see it's bright shadow shimmering on the rolling water. Ghost crabs darted past my feet like thieves in the night, going in one hole and out another. One of them climbed to my feet, its legs harmlessly piercing through my skin. I shook it off and it quickly escaped to the nearest hole it could find.…

After getting caught under that huge wave, it was relaxation time. Brushing the sand off of my hot pink and black Victoria Secret beach towel; preparing myself to soak up the sun, I put sunscreen on and my sunglasses on, and my earphones in. with the sound of slow jams R&B playing in my ear and also hearing children playing, I began drifting off to sleep. Then, waking up to the sound of play, fun, and laughter. Children and adults screams playfully because of the cold ocean water. Before getting up from my thirty minute nap under the sun, I took a deep breathe, taking in all the fresh air around me.…

Crushing violently against the slick and glimmering rocks that intermittently align the picturesque shore, the wonderfully blue velvet waves can be raucously heard from thousands of yards away. Jagged-edged and slippery, the mountains of bordering boulders act like the Great Wall of China, providing a barrier against the thrashing surf. The transparent sea seems to threaten passersby who dare to boldly venture closer, as the unfolding currents roll forward with intimidation. Reckless and consistent, the colossal whitecaps dance uncontrollably, as if they are harmoniously following to the thrashing beat of a tribal drum of a local oceanfront Hawaiian shack positioned nearby. Miles down and surrounding neighboring islands, the aggressive tide converts gradually into a calm and tranquil flow that peacefully spills onto the sand covered coastline. At these points, the flawless cerulean ocean quietly provides scarce tourists and daily natives with the pleasant opportunity to virtually complete solitude. Serene and relaxed, the flawless water eagerly invites citizens to explore its diverse marine life which it proudly maintains. The beach’s gritty sand is as warm as a fresh batch of Grandma’s homemade baked chocolate chip cookies straight out of the oven. Delicately running my bored hands through the grainy particles, I can feel the brittle fragments trapping themselves in my neatly groomed nails, inevitably getting stuck for the next couple days. Perfectly warm, the blinding sun gracefully embraces the minor island with its elegantly resounding rays while the various screechy seagulls impatiently soar past with a ravenous look in their beady eyes. Periodically a dainty and feathery cirrus cloud will appear in the otherwise spotless sky, merely enhancing the scenic atmosphere with more texture. The sky blue backdrop is deep turquoise eyes that swiftly penetrate my soul as I passionately stare into the sensual gaze of my beloved. With the bitter taste of salt…

As I walked along the shoreline of the beach looking for colorful sea glass and shark teeth, I observed canopies and tents set up a mile long on the beach. Families were gathered for a fun filled summer day. Children were building sand castles and splashing in the water, people young and old were lying on beach towels basking in the sun, couples were holding hands while walking along the shoreline taking in the beautiful scenery, and ATV’s and golf carts were driving by. I came to a stop for a second and closed my eyes just to take in what Mother Nature has given us, the surroundings were beautiful. It looked like it was a painted picture, while standing there the smell of…

It is approximately six in the afternoon on this bright shiny day in September. Today is a day like no other, for today we will experience the beauty and grace of the beach at night. For quite some time I've been meaning to experience this illusive phenomenon at night. With all the rumors about the beach being a gloomy and mysterious place under the moon lit sky, I just had to see for myself. The thought of reaching the beach was so tantalizing, that anxiety overwhelmed me. I packed the basic beach utensils; beach towels, sun block, playing cards, a guitar and firewood, therefore was set. The only ingredients missing now for my trip to the beach were my friends, and soon quickly found the solution by picking them up. Along the way, the bumpers of cars were visible for miles, as traffic filled the lanes of the 91 and 55 freeways.…

We continued to drive for about thirty more minutes, and I soon realized that we were getting close to the beach. I could smell the salt in the cool breeze of air from my window. It was mixed with the sweet fragrance of food from the boardwalk. When we arrived at our destination, my father checked us into our rooms at the Silver Leaf Resort. I really wasn’t paying too much attention to my surroundings, because I was bursting with excitement wanting to go to the beach. I begged my mother and father till I turned blue saying “please can we go to the beach now.” “Pretty please with sure on top.” My father just looked at me with that solemn face he always has and said “yes, baby girl we can unpack later.” “Now let’s head to the beach.” I screamed like a banshee with excitement and ran to the room and changed into my swim wear. I grabbed my maroon beach towel with my pale and shovel, and my mini purse that contained my shades, bubbles, and sun screen.…

As Bethany Hamilton once said, "Being out there in the ocean, God's creation, is like a gift he has given us to enjoy." The smell of grilled hot dogs lingered in the hot, Summer air from the boardwalk, and I smiled because I knew that it was going to be a wonderful day. To begin, I ran towards the luscious, majestic waves as they kissed the shoreline. For example, the waves came crashing down onto the sand with such a powerful force. As I began to run closer to the ocean, my feet touched the jewel- blue water, making my body shiver. Next, I looked around the crowded beach at all of the kids playing, noticing how much fun they were having. For instance, I could hear the waves splashing and the children playing on this hot Summer day. The sand…

It was time to unload our beach supplies. Spending a day at Chesapeake Bay always included our large blue cooler packed with plain turkey sandwiches and ice cold water bottles. My siblings and I had the responsibility to carry our beach tools, such as our yellow sand sifter, sand castle molds, and other various beach toys, to the sandy destination. The walk to the beach from the parking lot was down a skinny dirt pathway through a forest of trees. As we neared the water, the packed down dirt gradually turned to soft white sand. The sound of small waves caressing the shore became audible. High pitched squeals of small children at play along the water’s edge sounded like the shrieks of seagulls flying above the water looking for their next meal.…

My toes pressed firmly into the cool-March sand. The waves gently crashed onto the shoreline of the quiet, small town, which was still in hibernation from the cold winter season. St. Christopher’s beach was always breathtakingly beautiful at this time of year – the weather was not warm enough for the town’s more promiscuous side to come and twirl around in their sheer undergarments, but it was not too cold as to where the touch of the salty water felt like a thousand daggers were piercing your body. It was perfect. Perhaps the only perfect part I had left in my upside-down life.…

We jumped back in the car and hit the road. There wasn’t much to see heading into California. It is very similar to Vegas, in that, they are both lush with green grass and towering palm trees. But once we hit Laguna Beach, it was like a whole new world. It was a small town filled with very friendly people. Shiny, luxurious cars lined the streets, at least every third one being a convertible. People filled the beaches and streets, taking in the sunshine, some walking dogs, others bordered by what looked like family or friends. When we pulled up to our hotel, a quaint little Inn; spitting distance from the beach, we were pleasantly surprised. A two level spread of rooms surrounding a swimming pool that was accompanied by a hot sauna made out of an actual wine barrel. The nightly rate wasn’t much, the most we could afford for the planned two nights booked in a paradise called Laguna, so we had prepared for less. We checked in and walked straight to the beaches. Words cannot describe the sights of these beaches. The tide was low and we were able to walk right onto the coral reefs and admire the collected puddles of water and sea life. Beautiful pinkish, orange starfish and prickly, purple sea urchins lined the walls while small fish and hermit crabs explored the territory. The sky was the bluest blue and the sun beamed down on our skin, toasting us the perfect bronze, without a…

Walt Whitman (1819 - 1892) paints a scene of a little girl and her father looking up at the stars on an autumn night, at a beach. Notice that Whitman approves of the father teaching his daughter astronomy. Whitman had very liberal ideas about education that were ahead of his time, the 19th century.…

While I was sitting in the reticent bathroom pacing back and forth, scared, tense, and quivering I was scared to even look at the results. Sitting here thinking back and wondering to myself if that was the right answer. How could I do this to someone that I should have loved? Going back to an outstanding year in 2004, full of excitement and joy but ended in agony and sorrow. I was with a boy that I thought was my knight and shining armor, I mean this is really the first time I ever felt loved. Living in the dreadful house of my grandmother, he was my paradise, my escape route to have fun. There was no way that I could show any expressions of pleasure because I would be punished, so I would creep out of the house or say I was going somewhere that I wasn’t. Meeting up with this chocolate, suave, attractive young man I felt like I was in heaven. Rubbing on his velvety skin, just made me have this feeling that I couldn’t resist and that no one ever talked to me about. I mean my mind and my emotions were just out of control with a rage of hormones. As we made passionate love neither I nor him was even thinking about using protection we were just caught up in the moment, adoring every minute of it. The night came to a close and as I headed back home, the gut feeling I had just didn’t feel right. I mean, I knew I was already in trouble because my grandmother had called me almost 15 times on my cell phone, but this feeling was just different. While at home, I realized over the weeks that I started to eat more and I was always tired, something that I wasn’t used to because I was a very energetic person. Everyone started to notice all my friends, noticing that my clothes where getting a little tighter, I was always asking them for their food and they asked me, Are you pregnant? At that moment, I thought maybe I am it all makes sense with all the problems I have been having. After getting home that day from school my friend gave me a pregnancy test and I was…

    A Day at the Beach

One day as I was taking a walk on the beach, I stopped to admire the crystal blue waters of the ocean. I could see schools of tropical fish, starfish floating in and out with the tide, and a pair of crabs fighting over a recently caught meal. I looked upwards on the horizon and noticed a storm coming in. “I’ll just play in the water for a few minutes.” I jumped in the ocean and swam away from the beach, leaving the stress of everyday life behind me. What feels like an eternity of serene peace abruptly ends as I look above me and see a maelstrom of death. Everyone has left me and I stand alone, bobbing my head in and out of the once peaceful water. I struggle to reach the shore, as I feel my will to live seeping away with every crash of a wave, sending me under into the cold depths of nothing. What was once a boring beach filled with random tourists and empty aluminum cans now seemed like a safe haven. I struggled and squirmed for just one gasp of air, as I finally fell into the depths of nothing. In my final moments I reminisced what was meant to be a happy trip to the beach. I came here to get away from my life, and instead I want nothing more than to return back to it. Suddenly everything came rushing into focus at once, I found myself lying on the sand with a group of people surrounding me. As I stood up to head back to my apartment, I looked back at the now peaceful ocean. It may have not been the best day at the beach, but it did teach me to enjoy all the little things in…

When my telephone rings, I do the experiment of answering it: sometimes its a hot girl; sometimes it is a telemarketer. Even if we know which is more likely, we never know for sure. I called a girl last night and she immediately exclaimed "we were just talking about you!"; we are quite surprised when the measurement of picking up the phone has even the slightest predictability, such as being the person about whom we were just speaking. Picking up the phone is quite an interesting experiment to do.…
