The word hooker has taken on many definitions throughout history. Of course, it means one that hooks, and most are familiar with the chiefly North American slang definition of the word which defines a hooker as a prostitute. However, there are other definitions that may surprise you. Hooker is also used to describe a position played in Rugby, more than likely because the player in the position tries to hook the ball. The word is used as slang to refer to an undiluted brandy, whiskey, or other liquor as well. Hooker is also used to define one-masted sailboats used primarily in Ireland for fishing, and is also used to informally define old boats in general. In the year 1592, in a book on low-life called The Art of Conny Catching, Robert Green says that such thieves, “pull out of a window any loose linen cloth, apparel, or else any household stuff.” The implication is that the hooker catches her clients by a similar, though less tangible method. There is much speculation as to where the term originated, and it’s mystery and the stories behind it are often referred to as folk etymology. It is uncertain whether any of these events sparked the term hooker and it’s reference to prostitution. However, according to the Chicago Tribune, the late Bruce Catton who is a Civil War historian and journalist, did not completely exonerate General Hooker from the etymological development of the word and how it is used today.
