The Alienist
The Alienist In the novel The Alienist, by Caleb Carr, the setting occurs in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City in 1896. The setting of the novel influences the way Carr has written the book and what the novel in about. The Alienist is narrated in first person by an investigator named John Moore. Moore’s tales include a mentally disturbed serial killer who is loose among the people of the Lower East Side. The beginning of the novel takes place after Teddy Roosevelt’s funeral in 1919. Moore and his friend Dr. Kriezler are reminiscing about Roosevelt when both of the men recall the spring of 1896.
Caleb Carr depicts different forms of insanity throughout the novel. He seems to have a great concept on interpreting how intellectuals act when problems from their childhood start interfering with their own adulthood. Carr subjects himself because he states that he had a violent childhood himself, but he never does release how violent it was. I believe this helps on the overall aspect of the violence throughout the novel. However, Carr’s credentials speak for themselves on how he is a credible author. Caleb Carr is an American novelist and military historian. The son of Lucien Carr, a former editor of United Press International, he was born in Manhattan and lived for much of his life on the Lower East Side. He attended Kenyon College and New York University, earning a B.A. in military and diplomatic history. He is a contributing editor of MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History and writes frequently on military and political affairs. Carr has written many novels such as The Angel of Darkness, The Lessons of Terror, Killing Time, The Devil Soldier, and The Italian Secretary. His titles have been translated into many different languages worldwide. Carr now resides in upstate New York and teaches at Bard College.
The setting of the novel takes place in New York in 1896, at the end of the 19th Century. The setting and time period greatly influence

The Roaring Twenties was a period of frivolous days and exciting nights. Times were prosperous and life was good for most. In The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald writes about the fictitious life of Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire (Gross 1). The setting of the novel is New York in the twenties, a time, and place, where people were jovial and carefree. In New York, more than anywhere, people did not worry about life's downs, but focused on the highlife and partying. Prohibition made partying difficult, but it prevailed nonetheless. In the novel, Fitzgerald's description of humans was of an appalling nature. He shows them as careless, greedy, and inconsiderate; much like they truly were in this decade. Inevitably he would become involved in some type of lackadaisical ways. Fitzgerald's writing's were significantly influenced by these surroundings. In The Great Gatsby, F.
